Could you briefly tell me how you did the tacit approval? My renewal biometrics were in December 2025 and I’ve still not gotten approval.

Thanks

In the interest of diluting “alternative facts” with the truth, “Deferimento Tácito” is an explicit legal process to force summary approval of a renewal after 60 business days of inaction. Here is a detailed guide to tacit approval:

It’s not the panacea that people may think it is. My lawyer sent a registered letter to AIMA months ago giving demand for tacit approval. No response. That’s not to say you shouldn’t do it, because you definitely should. Just don’t expect it to be immediately effective.

It’s possible that it has been effective for some people with ARI, but I have not seen any reports of this yet. If you have received a certificate of tacit approval, could someone post a redacted copy to help others?

This discussion of tacit approval is way off topic here.
@tkrunning can you create a new thread for tacit approval or move these messages to an existing topic.

I hope you acted quickly. The web-based feature for requesting tacit approval was deleted from the gov.pt site today. A summary still appears if you search for it using their integrated search feature, but the link now redirects to a 404.

There are two saved copies on [archive.org](http://archive.org), but there’s some javascript that prevents the page from loading.

The deletion of the tacit approval page seems to have been temporary; perhaps there was a failed web site update. It appears to be working again now.

I had a friend on D7 request tacit approvals, which he received, and then his cards came shortly thereafter. Coincidence? Maybe, or maybe it shook his processes loose.

In any case, I used the web form to request them for my dependents (golden visa). Within a week or so I got the tacit approvals. Then the next day I got an email from Aima for one of my dependents asking us to resubmit the certified passport copy from our fall renewal appointments. So maybe it did “shake it loose!”

TBD if we actually get cards. But feels like some progress.

You’re Golden Visa correct? Were you in the pre-February 2026 renewal and didn’t have a QR code on your payment receipt?

Thanks

I started with a GV but live here permanently and luckily when I renewed, it switched to the lower rate. I’m in the pre-July 1 group that required an in-person meeting.

Can anyone confirm this was sent to president?

On Thursday June 11 2026, Portugal’s parliament took to a vote a package of additional amendments to the Foreigners Law (Lei de Estrangeiros, Lei 23/2007 as already amended by [Lei 61/2025](https://www.apoiojuridico-imigracao.com/blog/portugal-immigration-law-2025-changes)). The government of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro brought the package forward with the votes of the right-wing Chega party secured, which on paper guarantees passage. As the Portuguese daily PÚBLICO reported, the government “conta com o apoio do Chega, partido da ultradireita, para aprovar nesta quinta-feira, 11 de junho, o pacote de medidas adicionais da Lei de Estrangeiros que fecha ainda mais as portas aos imigrantes” ([source, translated: the government is counting on the support of Chega, the far-right party, to approve this Thursday, June 11, the package of additional Foreigners Law measures that closes the doors to immigrants even further](https://www.publico.pt/2026/06/11/publico-brasil/noticia/governo-portugal-conta-ultradireita-fechar-portas-imigrantes-2177791)). The vote was scheduled to begin at 2pm in the Assembleia da República.

A point worth being precise about: a parliamentary vote is not the same as a law in force. Once a decree is approved by parliament it must be sent to the President of the Republic for promulgation, and then published in the Diário da República before its provisions take effect. At the time of writing, the package had been brought to the June 11 vote with the governing bloc holding the numbers, but the final consolidated text and entry-into-force date should be confirmed in the official gazette before anyone treats a specific provision as already binding. This article focuses on the substance and the practical consequence for applicants, because the direction of travel — the removal of tacit approval — is what changes the calculus for people currently stuck in AIMA’s queue. This is a separate piece of legislation from the [2026 Nationality Law (Lei Orgânica 1/2026)](https://www.apoiojuridico-imigracao.com/blog/portugal-nationality-law-changes-2026), which deals with citizenship timelines rather than residence permits.

So the Government knows 100% that AIMA is f’d up, yet they want to remove every available legal avenue we have to challenge its ineptitude 😡

> ### The Portuguese government is counting on the far-right to further close its doors to immigrants.
>
> … **The third point of the anti-immigration package proposes the elimination of “tacit approval” for residency applications submitted by immigrants when the processing time exceeds the deadlines stipulated by law.** There are several legal cases brought by immigrants seeking this benefit.

> This is because the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) has systematically delayed the processing of residency applications. There are cases where immigrants wait up to four years to obtain the documentation that entitles them to live legally in Portugal.

They already knew it even before dissolving SEF. I confidently predict that AIMA will be dissolved or restructured in 3-5 years. Then the cycle is going to repeat itself. The parasite finds a new body to lengthen its existence.

Thanks for sharing!
I filed the Tacit Approval for my dependent yesterday after waiting 63 days for renovation with zero response. Immediately I received an email confirming that request of tacit approval has been submitted and will be reviewed. Do you have any idea how long it would take for the Certificate of Tacit Approval?

I filed for Tacit Approval and got the certificate within a week. I sent it to AIMA and a week later was notified that my card was heading to the printer. We’ll see how long that takes! But I’ve been expired for 14 months and had my appointment 8 months ago, so it was pretty straightforward.

AIMA responded to the email I sent with the deferimento tácito attached. I didn’t use an attorney for this, I live here and speak Portuguese so it wasn’t necessary.
