Awaiting Biometrics (Stage 3)

Ah… thanks & congrats. I’m interested to know whether SEF is still moving real estate applications through the system, or whether they’re just going to suspend all activity on those until new regulations emerge.

We just got this email from our lawyers to schedule our appointment. We can’t do it until after oct 14 because we’re in Italy but this is what we are being shown. Best of luck to all!!!

Update: we got an appointment for all four of us on the same day in Coimbra in October.

We were originally offered Nov 14 in Lisbon, but the lawyers recommended booking elsewhere given the delay.

You will need to get a Schengen visa. Any Schengen visa lets you into all Schengen countries, but in theory you should apply for the country where you will spend the majority of your trip.

Nov 7 may be too fast for a Portuguese consulate to process. If you are willing to spend a few days vacation in another Schengen country, you can research if applying through a different country’s consulate may be faster.

Otherwise you may need to reschedule your biometrics to give you more time to get your Schengen visa.

Congratulations!

I didn’t realize that having a SEF appointment didn’t come with a visa to travel to Portugal for the biometrics.

For D7 you have to get a special D7 visa and that comes with a predetermined biometric appointment.

GV you just need to enter as a tourist, so e.g. Americans don’t need any visa, but Indians do.

You should apply for a Business Visa as that will be faster.

If you are short of time, write and call the Portugal embassy and explain to them the urgency.
They will help to schedule the appointment for biometrics for business visa and issue the same.

Just a friendly reminder for everyone who have received their biometrics appointments to please update your GV timeline here:

Thank you

i have done bio-metrics multiple times for several schenzen visas, do i still need an appointment?

Article 90-A very specifically says you need a Schengen visa for GV. Your SEF agent might not particularly look or care, but they might.

Technically, US citizens have visa free access which I believe is interpreted as analogous to Schengen visa stamp. The net effect is the same.

Visa free for US citizens until the end if this year when an ETIAS is required for travel to the EU.

Though not technically a visa you still need it to enter the EU.

Nope.
According to sources, the EU has postponed the launch of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) until at least May 2025 . Reports blame the delays of the implementation of the Entry/Exit System EES, noting that the EES must be operational in order to launch ETIAS

Thanks for the update.

Looks like the new date is Spring of 2025

New requirements for Americans traveling to Europe postponed until 2025 - Good Morning America

the stamp you get at the border IS for all intents and purposes a schengen visa. you don’t have to apply for the visa, you are granted one automatically at the border, and are given rights as though you had actually applied for and received a schengen visa. it’s been a while since I looked but I believe it’s basically referenced as such in the schengen borders code.

that is why SEF makes a copy of your passport - to get the entry stamp.

If you have done biometrics in the last 5 years then you do not need to get them done.
However, you will still need an appointment with the embassy or their agent for filing the visa application.
