I’m at 4 years 5 month since my application date. No A2 certificate, No apostilled docs. Should I make the move?..

This is an opinion given by IRN to the lawyers working group several months ago. The idea is that the nationality application is not counted from the application but only when the process number is assigned by IRN. Several lawyers disagree with this interpretation but it is yet another obstacle to overcome and more risk of early applications.

I’d wager there’s few other bureaucratic processes in the world where there’s so much opportunity/requirement for lawsuits against the State:

  • Sue for AIMA Residency biometrics
oh and you might need to sue again to get AIMA to approve/issue cards
  • Sue for residency renewals
  • Sue that your Nationality application date is your Nationality application date
  • Sue that when you signed up for 5 years you had legitimate expectations that meant 5 years
  • Meu Deus, where does it end?

I don’t remember any of this mentioned in the glossy GV brochures

The worst thing is that one can pratically sue for everything but after the court’s verdict nothing happens
almost zero law enforcement to make things happen

Mine says:
“NĂșmero Processo: Em processamento”
“Submissão: IRN-xxxxx/2026”
“Arquivo Central do Porto”

How long does it stay in “em processamento” ?

I defer to someone who’s actually got their NĂșmero do processo - still waiting for mine. We’ve also seen that Porto and Lisbon IRN work differently, so “how long” may vary.

What date did you file your Nationality application? I assume it was filed online by a lawyer?

Yes, it was filed by a lawyer, electronically submitted on 2026-04-27

My lawyer filed electronically the week before you, and you’re already ahead of me w.r.t. knowing which IRN has your file and that “NĂșmero Processo: Em processamento”

Infuriating Portuguese randomness continues

NĂșmero Processo: Em processament is given on the day of application by the lawyer. So call your lawyer and requested for the submission code_NĂșmero Processo: Em processament

lol dream on bruv. in a few years the program will be even worse, not better

I heard the same thing from my lawyer. It’s a recent argument from IRN mostly to delay legal challenges and make their delays look slightly better than catastrophically bad.

How long do we have to still file early applications? I am considering it next week for family.

Main applicant already in and got the nĂșmero de submissĂŁo

4 years and 6 months since original application date.

The law wasn’t in today’s Diario, so unless it’s added later today (unusual) you could file Monday. I wouldn’t leave it any later than that.

I filed about a month ago and didn’t get a submission number at the time, but now have both a process number and tracking number. Does that mean that the submission number is essentially moot?

My post from a few days ago may help explain the IRN’s various numbers.

Filed mine (3 months short of 5 years). Have my A2 certificate. Only thing I am still awaiting are apostilled FBI and birth certificate.

Will let you know what happens

In recent days, the online service platforms of the Institute of Registries and Notaries (IRN) have registered very high levels of usage, with a significant increase in the number of nationality applications submitted through the online channel, following the announced amendment to the Nationality Law.

Due to this extraordinary influx of accesses, technical constraints may occur in the processing subsequent to the request.

Understanding that this situation may cause disruption and concern to applicants for Portuguese nationality and their respective representatives, the IRN informs that, for the purposes of applying the amendments to the Nationality Law, the date of submission of the application on the online platform will be considered .

The IRN is making every effort to ensure the normalization of the operation of computer systems and to minimize the constraints experienced.
