HOW-TO: GV Automatic Online Renewal Procedure (Jan 2023→)

I agree with you about (GV) PR 5 years. With 5 years, it is pretty much that citizenship will be settled. I’ve never seen anyone waiting more than 5 years for citizenship’s outcome. And if you have a GV PR, then technically you only need to spend 35 days in Portugal, then you are find to leave the country for 5 years and enjoy your life elsewhere waiting for PT citizenship.

OK, I owe the group an apology.
Colette and I share this account and anyone who has corresponded with her knows she is polite and provides well-considered posts. I’m… less of that; much more incitable.

I was in a bit of a mood when I responded and for that, I apologize to the group.
I’ll crawl back in my hole now

The only problem is that time for approval of GV PR is enormous and I know nobody who managed to get this GV PR so far. Normal PR - yes, GV PR - nope.

Yeah but is it slower than regular GV? If you’re going to file a lawsuit for regular GV to get your citizenship going, might as well file a lawsuit for GV PR too?

This honest reply and attitude is admirable especially considering the nasty discussions in many online forums. We all have bad days.

Hoping that we can support each other, share useful information here and get a good outcome from the bureaucracy. And then have the peace of mind to enjoy all the other positive aspects of Portugal. A luta continua!

I’m reading on some Facebook groups that automatic renewals have just opened up for April, May, June. Can anyone with those expiry dates confirm if this is for GV holders too?

@mahayacout Can I ask which Facebook groups are you looking at with info on GVs?

It’s in the Americans & FriendsPT FB group. Several people posted successful online renewals. Most participants in that group are D7 I believe, so not sure if things are open for GV applicants.

Edit: not sure why the above link is not displayed in English, but it seems to direct properly.

It is not for GV, my card expires this June but the site still shows

O título de residência que possui não permite a utilização da funcionalidade “renovação automática”.

Sad to hear we’re not included…

Just keep trying 4 times/ day. No one says it is not for GV. Other people with Manifestacao de interesse sometimes encounter the same issue. Sef’s website sucks. And sarcastically, now Aima keeps using the exact sef’s site for automatic renewal. It seems that they have to open the gate because they cannot handle the influx accumulating each day. If they want to solve 400k pendings, just keep the automatic renewal for the whole year. Then problem solves itself nicely and quietly without needing any stupid new measure and backward technology from Aima.

I tried and my lawyers tried to re-new through SEF Portal. I also commented on American &friends fbook group to see if any GV holders were able to renew or if it was all D7 holders. Let’s see if anyone had any luck.

Key points from the article below:

  • After a delay of almost two months, the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) approved the renewal of residence permits that expire between April and July. The functionality is available on the website of the former Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF)
  • This type of renewal is called “automatic” and does not require the user to go to a service desk.
  • As for titles from the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), the mechanism released today does not cover this modality.

Anyone whose card expired in 2024 Q1 renewed ?

Nope. Not yet.

@Mohaak We were able to submit a spouse renewal online in March during the brief window they were open but no card received as yet. Some people on forums have claimed that opening was a ‘technical glitch’ but AIMA told our lawyer the renewal was sent to IRN for processing. At this stage who knows what’s actually going on. We’re waiting for 90 days to expire before we take legal action to force them to process it.

Online renewal has definitely back in business one more time. BUT, those who had already applied for auto-renewal in 2021 cannot do it in 2024 anymore. The system simply does not give you the option to order renewal but only shows your last renewal history. Auto-renewal is practically an “once” opportunity.

Given your reference to 2021, I guess you’re talking about online auto-renewal of non-GV categories? The GV online auto-renewal started in Jan 2023, so even the earliest GV cards issued by that process would not be eligible to renew now, as they have more than 6 months validity left.
