I would suggest keeping this forum civilized and refrain from agitating its members here either pro or against some political parties.
There are plenty of other places online for inflammatory political debates.
Interesting Expresso article here on predictions for the Golden Visa and NHR programs under a Montenegro government. Might be some wishful thinking on behalf of the people quoted. But, in short, when you look at the publicly expressed views of some of Montenegro’s economic advisors, they expect the golden visa to stay (but possibly with a new name), and perhaps most interestingly a possible relaunch of the NHR scheme.
“Consultores esperam reedição dos vistos gold, com nome menos tóxico…”
Consultants wait for a new edition of Golden Visa, with a less toxic name…
I laughed my a$$ off. So they think Golden Visa is a toxic name. The opposite of Gold Visa could be Garbage Visa and seems to be heathy one with 0% toxic…
Yeah, Portugal’s not going to be able to repair the damage it has caused to its invest-ability just by renaming the program. That charade itself is indicative of the underlying problem….
They have to make things actually substantively suck less. I know it’s a wild idea….
They don’t mean the name is toxic to investors, they mean it’s toxic to Portuguese.
But as far as I know it’s never called “Golden Visa” anywhere in the legislation. That term was popularized by the news media. So the government has 0 power to rename it anyway.
“Wishful thinking” is probably the #1 skill of PT immigration promoters, far and above anything else they’re capable of
Note this bit about the “new” NHR, which also seems to just be aspirations so far:
The PS shouldn’t have repealed the regime and shouldn’t have created a new one, because the NHR was a structural option. Now there’s nothing. In March, there are no forms, no computer systems, no instructions, no clarification on the professions covered, everything has yet to be done.
I think the name is fine since “Golden Visa” is never an official name, regardless whatever the new name is, the media will continue to label it as Golden Visa.
By the way, I think restoring NHR is a wise move. If it’s restored, I will definitely move to Portugal some time in the future. Without NHR, forget about it, I will never be going to pay the hefty tax, there are many better alternative options.
The average Portuguese citizen does not understand the ARI or how it operates. This is one reason for the negative image. I spoke to a Portuguese person recently who explained that the Golden visa is now gone but when it was available it allowed immediate citizenship. We could only hope…
The government did not help matters by eliminating the ARI and renaming it as D2. Even I am confused by the whole thing. An education campaign about how ARI helps the country might be a better approach.
This Portuguese person said that Chega wants immigrants who pay taxes and benefit the country. He was very critical of the current process whereby any immigrant can express an interest in working and get a residence visa even if they don’t have a job. That is what Chega would likely target.
Overall, the AD won 80 seats in the 230-seat legislature, which is expected to return next week, followed by the Socialists at 78 seats and Chega, which was founded just five years ago, with 50.
It seems like this may be a good moment to petition this newly formed government to address the problems we’ve had with the ARI. I think PSD was the party that created the visa program, and if it’s true that even Chega is sympathetic to what has happened to us, then maybe we have a meaningful opportunity to apply some positive pressure. @tkrunning , could we organize something like this via this platform? Maybe a generally worded petition along with a way for individuals to provide their own facts and contacts?
