Stay Away from Novobanco --- 52 Days Locked Out of My Own Account — My Novobanco Golden Visa Experience

Unsecure upload of personal documents!

Is it worth it?

Do you want to bank with such an organisation?

What bank here offers a secure platform for uploads?

Santander don’t keep asking for documents first off.

Secondly, any that are required can be taken to the branch.

The branch performs a secure data transfer.

FWIW BPI’s mobile app is available in Portuguese and English and has a section for secure messaging ( including upload of files and pictures in both directions) and the ability for the customer to securely and electronically authorise documents and transactions - which I use from time to time.

They’ve been a great bank for me for 5 years.

Which branch of BPI have you used to open your account, if you don’t mind?

I believe my branch is called BPI All in One (Monumental) in Saldanha in Lisbon.

My original branch has closed ( also in Lisbon). I opened it at the time I did my capital transfer and was allocated an account manager ( who has also since left).

Hard to fault them for what I need. When I’ve had problems activating new cards other branches have been equally helpful.

Many thanks for the recommendation.

After a week of waiting, I finally received notification today that Millennium BCP Bank has approved my account. I am very grateful to the team member who sent me instructions on how to contact the bank staff. Since I live and do business in Portugal, it would be very difficult without a traditional bank account. It’s hard to open an account with a traditional bank these days, and without one, it’s difficult to pay my bills.

I’d like to add that I had a similar experience with NB. One day the online banking site just started asking me to verify my details on a popup form. I couldn’t complete that process successfully as in the form submission kept failing - whether it was due to not accepting my ID card or some other error I couldn’t say as I tried every which way to get the damned thing to just accept, I even let it keep the minor errors it had about my personal details, no dice.

I emailed my banker who, to be fair, usually does eventually get back to me and has even phoned me personally in the past to confirm something. But it was August so everyone in Europe was on holiday. It turned out that months before I’d logged in, because I don’t use this account and don’t currently reside in PT I barely ever check it, my account had already been locked due to KYC problems and my property tenant’s payments had been bouncing for months. It was way more than 55 days. It probably took at least a month to get my account working again. It’s insane and I should have changed banks there and then.

Just recently I received some KYC communication from them again saying my account would be locked. I emailed my banker and they somehow made it go away (my details they had on file slightly changed again, wtf). So yea, I wouldn’t recommend NB to anyone.

I had hopes that after the merger with Groupe BPCE that things would improve.

They seem to be getting worse, especially for GV recipients. Apparently the new management views us as money launderers or something like that. Very annoying…
