For what it’s worth - if you elected QEF, all gains are treated as LT whether or not they really are.
Of course January isn’t far enough away to matter, and you might find advantage in punting any gains into next year just for “why pay now” reasons.

Unfortunately I chose them, too. Awful experience. I have complained many times and they don’t care. I reached out to the owner in HK and he could also care less.
GCS required the fees upfront that include going with us to the biometrics and preparing new forms etc. I am guessing if we drop they won’t pay us back for the services they don’t render, but I don’t want to throw more money into a black hole.

QEF election is something you do on your own tax returns. You need to discuss PFIC tax handling with a qualified tax professional as it requires special handling. There are several threads here on NG where this is discussed as well, I and others have posted extensively on the matter.
