Golden visa expiry date: 21st June 2024
Renewal appointment request submission: July 10th 2025
Renewal appointment date: Sep. 22nd 2025 (attended by lawyer)
Card receipt date: 17th Nov. 2025
Were you unable to do the automatic online renewal that was available mid-2024? Or didn’t try?
My lawyer was unable to do the online renewal.
I have done the same but with citizenship approaching I am taking no chances. The point of PT for us was to be in the Schengen zone was that our daughter lives in Malta. So until we get our cards we will be using our Schengen time in Malta. Which means PT misses out on a ton of VAT as well as IRS. Oh well. Their loss.
6 months here and no cards received yet. In-person appointment at Portimão. Seriously considering a lawsuit against Aima…

Lucky you. My appt done by lawyer was Sept 23. Oh well.
Thanks. Interesting.
I am just starting to think about renewals of our first cards and I am dreading the whole process of securing appointments for family members, ideally at the same office on the same day but no guarantee of that, renewing documents etc.
Noting that the renewals process has been in flux, is it now definitely the case that if your biometrics are less than 10 years old then in fact your lawyer can attend the in-person appointment on behalf of yourself and dependents, so we only need to supply our documents and the renewal fees to the lawyer and they take care of the rest?
This would be a huge relief if true.
It is true, but I highly recommend attending in person together with your lawyer if possible. There are plenty of nuances that can be mishandled if you are not there..
This is super confusing. If you wanted to be in Malta, why didn’t you just do a Malta GV? Why would you even try to deal with PT?
Ok good to know. It would be fine for me to go as primary applicant but if the four of us don’t have convenient same day/same location appointments we may have to take our chances with lawyer only or lawyer and myself.
I believe the Malta GV is super expensive. Started looking at it myself due to the current uncertainty with PT. The one year (or thereabouts) time to citizenship is attractive but not sure we want to say goodbye to EUR one million! Although I saw something saying you only hand over the money AFTER you have been approved! Would need to do more due diligence!
Malta’s citizenship by investment is discontinued.
From what I gather from a cursory online search it’s been recently brought back having been revised/amended … but do give a shout out if I’ve misunderstood something.
When I started the process in PT almost 8 years ago, Malta was cheaper, and I just took a quick look now and it seems to still be a lower investment. We did Portugal because our plan was to move here (which we did). Knowing what I know now, I have some regrets about not just doing a D7 - though we seem to be out from under the high fees now so in that sense it still worked out. Closing in on 2 years since my passport application, so hopefully less than a year to go.
At the moment it is on hold. I have friends in that mess.
When do you guys plan to request the renewal application? 3months before the expiration date of the card?
Just wondering if its best to start the renewal asap i.e., 90 days before card expiry or as late as you can i.e., 30 days before card expiry.
The benefit i can see if you apply early you get your cards with very little time with expired cards, but benefit of applying late would be if you get cards late the could potentially mean one less renewal by the time everything is said and done.
Another quick question, when you get your renewed cards do they start from date when last card was expired or Do they start 2 years from the date new cards are issued? I guess, if its later then its best to apply as late as you can.
