Is there any possible way to submit these documents without them expiring? It doesn’t seem like there’s any chance for the criminal background check with only 3 months validity. Marriage certificate with 6 months, probably not. Birth certificates with 12 months? Maybe?? We’re spending a lot of time and money getting these documents from all over the world and then they won’t be valid anyway and we have to do it again.

What happens after those who apply after January 2022? Is there any access to the public health system once you get your first residence permit? Thanks.

Well, of course, after you receive your GV residence permit card then you can get access to public services including healthcare.
That’s the same for everyone.

But those who applied before Jan2022 have access before receiving their first card.

Tommy, how exactly did you manage to get that? Did you get a GHIC card at a Loja do Cidadão?

Thanks.

Hey Roman, actually I am yet to apply for the SNS number, it is on my ever-growing to-do list here in PT…
But I know access to SNS is explicitly permitted in the Despacho, besides @nevadaandonward had a detailed instruction posted some time back on how to get it.

GHIC refers to the EU-wide healthcare access, so that’d be a further step.

Thanks for the quick reply! I will search for the instructions.

BTW, you were absolutely right about the tax residency and NHR. I got NHR done in one day once my fiscal address was changed to PT - that took three tries here in Lisbon.

Cheers.

Hello, do you need the residence card first in order to have you address change to PT?

No, you don’t. I still don’t have mine, though I have been approved and had my bio done last January.

I did go the real estate route so I do have a title to an apartment as a supporting document.

Slightly off topic, but what benefit would you get from having an SNS card / number?

I’ve been living in PT for 18 months and don’t have one either, I can’t see what additional benefit I would get so haven’t applied but interested to know (FWIW I use private GP /health care)

Thank you! :grinning:

I believe it would allow you access to PT public health system and, more importantly, to Europe-wide health network should you need it.

FYI, I also live in PT for just over a year and use Medis.

Do I understand correctly that emergency services are not available privately, so one would need to have an SNS user number for access?

Yes, I think that’s right. It’s included within travel insurance but not with private medical to the best of my knowledge.

I also did some research since asking, and I think pre-existing chronic conditions could also be excluded privately but covered by the state (that doesn’t apply to me).

My expectation (hope) as a legal resident should the need for A&E arise, I can apply for SNS when / if I receive a bill.
Alternatively, I have an GHIC issued by the UK that should cover this.

Ah yes! That’s true, GHIC does cover emergencies, perfect.

Well, not quite. Medis would cover emergency and potentially evacuation to PT from other countries (I think, barring US due to exorbitant rates). SNS would entitle you to seek medical help from the nearest facility even on non-emergency basis.

That’s my understanding.

Tommy, my understanding is that A&E service is available to anyone and everyone in PT regardless SNS. Of course, billing is another thing.
If you have SNS, you will pay lower price for the prescription at pharmacy.

Yes, I purchased private health insurance, and that is what the insurance broker told me. In an emergency, I am to use emergency services, even without having the SNS.
