Big twist on the Portuguese citizenship law on today | Nov 13

Hey guys, quick update because things just took an unexpected turn with the citizenship law.

So, the Socialist Party (PS) decided to use a really rare constitutional mechanism and asked the Constitutional Court to do a preventive review of the new citizenship law. Most people thought the President would be the one to trigger this, but PS basically jumped ahead and did it themselves.

And get this: this is only the third time in the last 42 years that this mechanism has ever been used. So yeah… not something you see every day.

Because of this move, the law is now basically frozen. It can’t be signed, can’t be published, and won’t come into force while the Court analyzes it as stated here

PS is expected to formally submit the request next week. Once they do, the Constitutional Court will have up to 25 days to issue their decision.

So for now everything’s on pause. Curious what everyone thinks about this? Is it a smart move, a political game, or something else?
