The old system of face to face appointments were so stressful, trying to schedule appointments for the entire family, ideally on the same day at the same location on a day we are all able to get there flying in as we were from overseas, juggling jobs, kids in school/uni with exams and so on. It was a total nightmare. Thank goodness for this online system and now i gather the lawyer can just attend on your behalf. Seems there are glitches with the tech. I’m just crossing my fingers about the whole damn thing and kind of wishing I hadn’t bothered!

Today I received my renew residence permit card.
The physical process was completed in Santarém at the end of October 2025.
The card was issued at the end of May 2026 in Ponta Delgada, Azores.
This card I received refers to the physical process completed in Santarém; I also have the online process I completed in April 2026 under review on the Renewal Portal.
Awaiting the arrival of the cards for the rest of the family.

The only upside to these ridiculously long delays in processing renewals is that Portugal is cheating itself out of more renewal fees over the long term. That puts a smile on my face.

This appears to answer one of my questions: I was wondering whether the issued and expiry dates on the replacement cards are contiguous from the previous one or if they start a new two-year block. I am getting indications that they start a new two years.
As we are legally resident in the no-mans-land period between valid cards, in order for this to be genuinely useful we would need at least a 12-month gap between cards in order to get to the five-year point from the first card’s date to apply for permanent residence with only one renewal payment.
So, we come to the second question, after applying for permanent residence then must we maintain temporary residence even if PR takes years and years due to the lack of appointments or does the act of applying for PR initiate another period of legal residence in no-mans-land without a card that actually says so?

My lawyer submitted my application for the PT GV in April, and when he went to submit my dependents, he said that there is a technical issue and they have not been able to submit payment.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue?
The quote I was told was:
“Your application has already been submitted, with all documentation translated. At the next stage—payment of the analysis fee—we are unfortunately facing a technical issue that has been affecting the system for some time. Specifically, when attempting to generate the payment reference, the portal does not allow it to be issued. We currently have other clients experiencing the exact same problem.”
We submitted our application and payment went through no problem. Our daughter, however had trouble with the payment being processed, even though the actual payment was made by our attorney in both cases. It took about 3 months before she was notified that her family’s application and payment were accepted.

I would like to re-iterate that the payment issue already happened to my dependent back in Sept 2022. It took more than 2 months for the payment to go through. The payment issue could have been there much earlier than 2022…But Sept 2022 was my experience.

I have this problem and my card expires in 3 weeks. My lawyer said it’s a technical issue that seems to happen sometimes, and has raised the issue with AIMA. Now waiting… I’m the primary applicant - I see it reported quite a lot for dependents, but haven’t seen many (any?) other issues like this for primary.

I can’t answer your direct question - I hope members of the chat will do that.
But, yesterday I asked my lawyers ( who submitted my renewal application under the new process in April) what the timescale was for getting my new card - their answer was 6 to 8 months.
