New online ARI renewal process (Feb 2026)

Today a new online renewal process was announced for ARI investors:

I am knowingly and intentionally starting a new thread for tracking experiences and advice with the NEW online ARI renewal process. My motivation is to keep this focused, topical, and separate from the miscellaneous content in the renewal mega-thread. I welcome comments about failure, problem solving, and success regarding registration, completion, payment, and any available documentation of completion (especially for travel). And it’ll also be interesting to know when cards arrive relative to the date(s) of renewal and payment.

To get things started, I’ll observe that I attempted and failed to create a login. The site is pointedly restricted to Portuguese IP addresses, but that was not an obstacle.

Moving along, it asks you whether you want to proceed in Portuguese or English. This may be a trick question…see below. In general I’ve noticed that Portuguese web sites sometimes operate less smoothly when the “English” option is chosen vs. the default Portuguese option.

The account creation process prompts for:

  • email address
  • residence card number
  • NIF
  • birthday

The birthday field allows free-form entry, but in which date format? I used the date picker widget, in English, and I was surprised to observe that it filled in the date in the familiar US format (MM/DD/YYYY). That’s surprising and slightly alarming, since date parsing bugs are common on low volume, multilingual web sites. Anyway, I was rejected with the message “Citizen not identified or not eligible at this stage”. Then I tried again in the Portuguese site (probably better tested, with the DD-MM-YYYY format), and failed again with the message “Cidadão não identificado ou sem acesso nesta fase”. I tried one more time using the date widget, clicking the left arrow 500 times to reach my birth month, and failed yet again.

The announcement mentions that the site will go online next week. I’ll wait for that day and try again. Meanwhile, I welcome others’ observations and tips. Perhaps I’m misreading my residence card number (I vs 1, O vs. 0), and missing out on the fun and simplicity of online renewal. So if others announce success, I’ll know I’m doing something wrong and try harder.

Best of luck everyone!

I am happy to add to your dataset.

I am not yet eligible for renewal but I tried to create an account nonetheless.

I received the same error, so I suspect they load eligible renewal applicants in stages, or there is a renewal date eligibility restriction on the create account function.

The correct date format is almost certainly DD-MM-YYYY

It’s morning on the official launch day of the ARI renewal portal. I tried again. I hit the same error messages.

I received this feedback today from my lawyers on the new renewal process-
“Based on the information currently available, the portal is currently limited to residence permits expiring up to March 2026. While it is likely that the authorities will extend the system to cover permits expiring after March 2026, this has not yet been formally confirmed, and for the time being we can only rely on the parameters currently in place.”

The portal for ARI renewals has been delayed until February 16th

As usual, the circus show continues….

Does anyone know, will using this online process still require attendance at a renewal appointment, even if you don’t require updated biometrics? Or does it eliminate that stage?

hi…does anyone exprienced recently renewal which was 181 euros? the price changed for real estate investors?

Yes, and you should add 138 euros for visa type conversion.

Today they opened online ARI renewal; does anyone know how to fill out the form?

I have the same question as you, but AIMA hasn’t made an official announcement yet.

Do you have any current confirmation that they opened the portal today? I know that two weeks ago they announced a delay in the planned launch date until today, but government IT project launches don’t always go as planned.

I await the good news that the portal has actually launched. And I will be ever so pleased to read that people are using it successfully. And I will breathe a sigh of relief when my renewal is completed.

As for the risks of being a day 1 pilot user of the new renewal portal … “may the odds be ever in your favor”

Unfortunately, due to a network error, I couldn’t upload the images for you to see. Actually, AIMA has opened online renewal, but it’s probably only for investors so far.I have created an account with AIMA, but my card is dependent.

Does anyone know what the permit number is on the card? I have a number in the top right corner of the card that starts with an “S”, is that it?

I tried but could not open an account. Still the same error as before. Have you encountered any difficulty when open an account?

Yes, that’s right. The system works normally during business hours. But today, after 7 PM, it malfunctioned, and now it’s back online.

It consists of 9 characters, including numbers and letters, located in the top right corner.

I received an email announcement directly from AIMA advising me that the portal is now online for renovations, covering my cohort, but I still wasn’t able to create an account using the correct details for my permit. What are others’ experiences?
