Permanent Residency application, switching from GV

@gmapham If you’re living in Portugal, you have literally dozens of options to attend PLA classes in person near wherever you’re living, for free, courtesy of the government, and get a certificate which can be used for naturalisation, without going through CIPLE or any other exam. Do look at the thread mentioned above.

This is by far the best way to go if you can be in Portugal for 2 months consecutive. Unfortunately, not everyone is able to do this.

They really dont want you to learn Portuguese anywhere but physically in Portugal…

But even if we apply for citizenship the application process takes 2 years (and maybe more?) so we need a valid visa to remain living in Portugal. The GV renewal is very expensive but at least less expensive than the GV Permanent Residence.

Does anyone know of other ways to apply for a non-GV related visa to maintain legal right to live in Portugal while we wait for the citizenship process?

I think it is still best that you get the GV PR. Although it is more expensive, but it lasts 5 years. Normal GV only lasts 2 years and only god knows how long it might take for the citizenship application. At least with 5 year GV PR, it gives peace of mind and you will not be worried about renewal again. You can be out of country if you wish while awaiting the citizenship’s result.

Doesn’t the GV PR take even longer than citizenship?

Maybe but while a residency application is pending you’re probably considered to be legally resident, not sure if the same is true while a citizenship application is pending.

The practice is that on the stage 3 and 4 of naturalization you need to have a valid residence permit.

What is a GV PR?

In what way does it differ from a GV.

How does one apply if already in the GV queue?

Thank you

It’s something you can apply for after holding the ARI for five years. Have a read through this venerable post:

5 yr residency with the requirement to spend 35 days over 5 yr period and which costs 2.5 higher than usial GV (fixed price per year, obviously :slightly_smiling_face:). Very long to get. Frankly speaking, I do not know anybody who got it so far. But the problem is, that after they introduced GV PR, AIMA /SEF does not allow GV holders to apply for normal PR even if you moved to Portugal.
P.S. If somebody managed to apply for normal PR with previous GV in 2023 or even in 2022, tell us!
