Looks like they are going to manage it! Allegedly, 10th November 2024 is the launch of the EES system.
I flew from Faro on Monday and noticed several, what seemed to be,“self- service terminals” under plastic wrapping - presumably ready to scan/register facial photo and fingerprints, onwards from 10th November.
So, no more passport stamps to prove our days in Portugal, for future GV renewal. (Don’t forget to keep those boarding passes etc in future everyone!! And use your NIF everywhere!!)
And if anyone is planning a flight to/from Europe around 10th November, as you say Jeff, there’s bound to be TOTAL chaos accompanying this new system ! I, for one, do not plan to travel after 10th November until things have settled down and are working. (Might take a while ). I’m sure there will be horror stories all over the news in five weeks time ! If I can, I think I’ll wait to travel until the stories stop .
I’m sure there will be confusion and delays as EES goes lives.
My understanding is that EES does not apply to Biometric Residence card holders (like ARI). I hope they create a new line for these card holders, similar to EU citizens and certain 3rd country Biometric passport holders have today, otherwise we’ll all be stuck in the same mess…
I have renewed in person 3 times. Always provided:
stamps (they have asked about those in particular). Preferably use direct flights to enter EU via Portugal border. Now there will be no stamps, so I have no idea, but supposedly it should be in the database
Boarding passes
Receipts from the hotels (they send data to AIMA, btw)
Receipts from purchases with your name. Bank statement with purchases in Portugal also works. NIF alone does not solve the problem, because it does not matter whose NIF you are saying in shops. Anybody could do it
How do you get a receipt with your name on? Do credit card statements with credit card in your name help? That wouldn’t work for my minor children though.
I imagine for children, it is sufficient to prove they flew with you, and then your proof of presence should transfer to them. Minor children aren’t going to split off from their parents…
Ok guys, for those of you who are getting fanatical about proving your stay, I have got a suggestion
Register all your family at the Leroy Merlin shop, get your store card numbers, and use them every day to buy say a pair of pliers or a toilet brush. Then at the till choose the ‘simplified factura’ and opt for your name being printed.
And yes, your actual name will then be printed on the receipt.
A positive side effect is that you’d be able to start your small business selling used pliers on ebay.
I will state again… Based on what we’ve been instructed by our lawyer, it is not a requirement to have your name and/or address on a receipt. They are only looking for the NIF.
I use Uber extensively in Portugal, and provide my lawyers with PDFs of Uber receipts. It doesn’t have a NIF, but it does have my name and the addresses of the start and end point of the trip, which is a pretty useful addition to the stay proofs. Not a substitute for NIF receipts, but an addition. It is low maintenance, because you’re likely to use Uber anyway, and Uber sends mail which will last a heck of a lot longer than thermal prints.
Even if you didn’t plan on it at the time, you can go through your old email today and make PDFs of previous trip receipts.
I have a question. assume i got the Portugal residency card in July 2024. Do i have to stay 7 days minimum first year (i.e. by July 2025) and then 14 days from July 2025 to July 2026 for a total of 21 days, or can i stay 14 days in first year (e.g. in October 2024) and satisfy requriement all the way until July 2026? I’m confused about whether it’s 21 days total from July 2024 to July 2026 or whether it could be 14 days in the first year and nothing in the second year for a total of 14 days.
According to the regulations, which haven’t been updated, you must stay 7 days in the 1st year, and 14 days in years 2-3.
Safest is probably just 7 days every year. If you want to do 14 days you can do it exactly around your card’s 1 year anniversary so you have 7 days in 1st year and 7 days in 2nd year.
