Perhaps a good way to remain an EU candidate?
Well the way this archetypal Balkans bandit behaves, I’m guessing it will be at least 5 to 10 years before they get to join the EU…
Optimistic, aren’t we
Serbia would be another Poland or Hungary, in terms of maliciousness within the EU. I don’t expect any more expansion until Brussels sorts out their unanimity problem
I read thru some of the articles - I am not sure there are any changes for those of us that may have German descent but whose parents were not German at the time of our birth (due to parents having to renounce to have citizenship elsewhere)?
The backlog for this is going to be immense. I Imagine every turkish and russian permanent resident is going to apply for this.
The current processing times are 2 years… Imagine adding a couple of million people to the backlog.
Such a comparison with our (Portuguese) ongoing debacle…
So the citizenship process in Germany varies wildly based on where you live (though usually 1-2 years until the change of naturalization requirements), and luckily it’s not processed by the universally hated Ausländerbehörde. Based on what I’ve read, that institution is only slightly less dysfunctional than AIMA, with employees that should have never had any customer facing roles…
Also, for someone who applied for citizenship only a few days later than the person described in this story the wait time would have surely been a lot longer.
Finally, as the article also points out, the current German government is dropping the 3-year pathway to citizenship. And that’s probably for the better, as according to several accounts it seems that was never or nearly never granted in practice, even for people who seemingly met the requirements.
Of course the current situation at AIMA and IRN is worse than what’s described here, but I still think this is a good example of things usually looking better from the outside than what the reality is usually like on the ground.
