Having Trouble Opening Bank Accounts in Portugal – Need Advice

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some advice regarding banking issues in Portugal. My parents and I recently visited Millennium Bank to open accounts. Initially, everything seemed smooth—we provided all the required documents and signed paperwork and were told it would only take a few days.

However, nearly a month passed with multiple additional document requests, all of which we quickly fulfilled via email. After this lengthy process, Millennium Bank ultimately denied our application without providing any explanation. Even when I personally approached them, highlighting my status as a Golden Visa holder, Lisbon property owner with international income, and existing customer at Novo Banco Portugal for over two years, they still denied me without clarification.

Additionally, when I attempted to open accounts for my parents at Novo Banco (where I’ve had an account for two years), they asked for documents in advance, supposedly to review our eligibility for an in-person appointment. It’s been almost a month, and they haven’t replied at all.

We’re quite puzzled and frustrated. We don’t live in Portugal full-time, and I’m wondering:

Has anyone else experienced difficulties similar to those experienced by Portuguese banks?

Is there any possibility or process for remotely opening bank accounts with either Millennium or Novo Banco?

Do you have any tips or recommendations for navigating this situation?

Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
