My Portugal GV checklist

For all the help I have gotten here I wanted to pay it forward a bit. I know there are a lot of guides, but I like brainless as possible step-by-step checklists. So here is what I used to get to the starting line of the wait. Some things could be done in parallel, but the apostilles can take time so worth getting on those right away.

1) Collect PT GV application materials

  • Apostille FBI background checks for adults (applicant)
  • Apostille marriage certificate (applicant)
  • Apostille children’s birth certificates (applicant)
  • Copies of Social Security cards and passports for entire family (applicant)

2) Find attorney

  • Research and select an attorney (applicant)
  • Attorney retention agreement (attorney)
  • Attorney payment (applicant)
  • Power of attorney (attorney and applicant)
  • Obtain NIF tax number (attorney)

3) Raise funds and get them to Portugal

  • Raise €500K funds (applicant)
  • Select bank and open account (applicant)
  • Transfer €500K to PT bank (applicant)
  • Bank declaration of UP holding (attorney)
  • Honor declaration for five year hold (attorney)
  • AIMA forms for each dependent (attorney and applicant)

4) Investment

  • Decide on investment and contact chosen fund (applicant)
  • Fund declaration of GV qualification (attorney & fund)
  • Submit fund subscription docs to bank and fund (applicant)

5) The Wait

  • Biometrics visit (applicant)
  • Permanent residency approval (attorney)
  • Portuguese language lessons (applicant)
  • 1st year visit ≥7 days (applicant)
  • 2nd/3rd year visit ≥14 days (applicant)
  • 4th/5th year visit ≥14 days (applicant)
  • Portuguese A2 language certification (applicant)
  • Apply for renewals as needed (attorney & applicant)
  • Apply for citizenship (attorney & applicant)

I used Fio Legal, Fibre Payments for the currency conversion and transfer, Bison Bank, and invested in two Oxy funds. Overall I was happy with all of those choices.
