Hello, I’ve been reading about the GV process for several weeks, now, and despite all of its many challenges and pitfalls it is still looking like our best option. However, I would really like to understand what it looks like for our dependents to gain citizenship via this path. We have two children, 18 and 16. The 18 year old is about to graduate high school and will be attending a craft institute for a year. After that the plan is to attend a 4 year university. The 16 year old will likely do something similar. It sounds as though supporting our kids through school (we are not sure where those schools will be) qualifies them to be on the GV path to citizenship as dependents, but with the process taking so much longer than 5 years what happens if they finish school and would like to earn an income before citizenship is granted? I have searched and haven’t found much concrete info on this. Their ability to become citizens will really be the deciding factor on whether this is a viable path or not. Thanks for your help.
I would say the path is viable but you should apply asap, otherwise your children may run out of their full-time education status too soon.
Yeah, what Tommy said. Dependents are eligible for the GV, so you literally answered your own question.
So as long as they are being educated and dependent for 5 years we’re good. Even if we wait years longer for citizenship? The reason I wonder is because I’ve read that the investment must still be in place for citizenship to be completed. That that part mustn’t change even if it takes a lot longer than the 5 year requirement. It makes me wonder if the kids are constrained longer than 5 years as well. Sounds like that isn’t the case so that’s good.
Look up the requirements for the citizenship application, and it will clear your doubts. That which is said is sufficient for the wise
