Reasons for Portuguese citizenship rejection

Can Portuguese authorities deny citizenship because they think that I flew out of the country too frequently and overall failed to make Portugal my centre of interests even though I didn’t violate any period of absence rule during my D7 stay? Or do they simply look at the periods of absence and if that’s alright then they don’t consider anything else?

I believe that’s the case but you can check with a lawyer.

The naturalization law used to mention a “connection to the Portuguese community” but that was removed a few years ago in an amendment. It still applies to Article 2 (minor children requesting citizenship based on a parent who naturalized), but not to Article 6.1 (adults naturalizing based on residence).

Well, it may always change in the future, and it is only my opinion, but it seems the following:

  1. the period of absence and permit requirements are checked during renewal. E.g. in autorenewals nobody checked anything. But now AIMA says that it resumes to check. If AIMA catchs you, they might not renew.
  2. So far for citizenship process based on residency, AIMA creates reply based only on your residence permits, so if you get 5 yrs on residence cards AT THE MOMENT it is enough

Do you have some documentation of that? Everyone says it is still one of the criteria

All I see is this: ::: Lei n.Âş 37/81, de 03 de Outubro

CAPĂŤTULO IV
Oposição à aquisição da nacionalidade por efeito da vontade
Artigo 9.Âş
Fundamentos
1 - Constituem fundamento de oposição à aquisição da nacionalidade portuguesa por efeito da vontade:
a) A inexistência de ligação efetiva à comunidade nacional;

Nationality por efeito da vontade can be opposed due to lack of connection but that is only Article 2 (minor children), Article 3 (spouses), and Article 4 (people who lost Portuguese nationality as minors).

Not included is naturalization Article 6.1.

That is very interesting, thank you for the reply!
