Seeking help: Working remotely outside of Portugal for long period of times

Hello Everyone,

I’m currently working remotely as a Software Engineer, based in Porto, Portugal. I hold a temporary residence permit for 3 years, which was automatically renewed after my initial 2-year card. I’ve been living in Portugal since February 2020.

I have a couple of questions and would appreciate any advice:

  1. Working Outside of Portugal: Due to family reasons (I’m getting married next year, and my fiancée is unable to relocate to Portugal at the moment), I’m considering working outside Portugal for extended periods. Is this a valid reason to be exempt from the residency requirements?
  2. Impact on Residency and Citizenship: Could spending prolonged time outside Portugal affect my eligibility for permanent residency or citizenship?

Thanks in advance for any insights!

It depends upon your specific situation and requirements, it is not the same for everyone. For example, once I get my PT residency card I will have to only spend 1 week in PT a year (or 2 weeks for 2 years). And this would not affect my residency or future citizenship at all. Whether I am there 1 week or 52 weeks, makes no difference. Check with your immigration lawyers to confirm.
