Credit to @live2learn for spotting this… perhaps will need to change title of this thread from 5 years to 10 years?
Oh, and note the suggestion not to expect “Wait time now counts towards __ year residency” to ever be put into regulation by this government.
Government considers extending residence time in Portugal to apply for nationality, DN Brazil
…Just over a year ago, Parliament approved a law that now counts these five years from the moment the citizen applies for residency. This change could reduce the time required to apply by up to two years.
However, this law has not been regulated by the current government , which, in private conversations, had already indicated that it did not agree with the five-year period, much less with the reduced count approved by the new law. Some lawyers argue that the law does not need regulation, but at the same time, many immigrants are unable to apply under the new law, because there is no regulation. With today’s statement, it is clear that the government will not regulate the law before leaving office - nor after if it is reelected in May.
