Only 238 people are watching the YouTube channel. I wonder how many are current citizens? When I speak to my Portuguese friends, they know this is happening, but they feel as powerless as we do to do anything about it. They have no faith that the government acts in the country’s long-term interests.
I am watching via https://canal.parlamento.pt/
The current MP is saying something along the the lines of “the same AD and Chega parties who now want to restrict attainment of Portuguese nationality were the ones who came up with the program (Golden Visa) to sell nationality for Eur 500k and allow them 15 days of vacation to the country in order to qualify for citizenship…” ![]()
I shouldn’t be surprised but the dishonest rhetoric and empty posturing in this parliamentary “debate” is embarrassing …
Yes, very politicised…
They are voting now…
At this point, I want the law to get passed. I want it to get signed and be done with and not have any issues in the constitutional court so that it can finally be done. But what I think will happen, it will go for constitutional review, be revealed to have issues, and then we are back in another 1 year of limbo, ambiguity and uncertainty where GV companies and business continue to take advantage of people citing the uncertainty as the reason to get in quick, and those stuck in limbo continue to have the impossible choice of pulling out or waiting in “hope” for some relief, only for this whole debacle to repeat a year later.
Enough damage has been done… I just want it to end, I’m mentally burned out from this. I don’t want to even hear the words “Portugal Golden Visa” again if you ask my honest opinion…
I appreciate your honest opinion. This could easily describe us as well.
Thanks, got it, and sent.
I wish, one year of limbo would be enough for me to get in my citizenship application!
But no, we saw from the foreigners law which went to the constitutional court, it was modified and the president signed the new version just weeks after the court’s comments.
is there a list of email addresses we can send mail to - not that it will make a difference now, since they are voting to pass it in the next day or so..
Only the President and his referral to the Constitutional Court can save us from the populists now.
His contact details are posted at least 3 times above.
The new law was just approved in the parliament according to CNN Portugal: Lei da Nacionalidade aprovada na generalidade - CNN Portugal
Thanks for the update, I can proudly say I’ve wasted 500k EUR now.
Law approved. 157 in favor (PSD + Chega), 74 against (PS, PCP). The full rug pull in the worst possible version.
Is there a final text of the law yet?
157+74=231???
Ok what’s done is done.
Now we hope and expect the President to send it for constitutional review. They will almost surely find parts of this radical bill to be unconstitutional and send it back for revision. Unless they are uncharacteristically efficient, this likely won’t get finalized until after the New Year so let’s see what revisions they come up with before everyone freaks out.
But we still need to write to the president as I believe the TC will only rule on the articles that he highlights
I sent the following message to the President for those who wish to cut and paste and/or amend:
Subject: Request for Constitutional Review of the Recent Nationality Law
Dear President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa,
I am writing to express my deep disappointment with the recent Nationality Law passed by Parliament. As someone who has made a long-term commitment to Portugal through the Golden Visa program and now resides here permanently, I feel profoundly let down by what appears to be a “bait and switch” from the assurances and expectations that were presented when I invested XXXX years ago.
This change undermines the trust and good faith of those who chose to support Portugal’s economy and integrate into its society under the framework of the Golden Visa program. I sincerely hope that you will consider sending this legislation for constitutional review to ensure that the principles of fairness, legal certainty, and legitimate expectations are upheld.
Respectfully,
Did you write in English or have it translated into Portuguese (by yourself / ChatGPT)? This is something I’ve been wondering how to approach…
I wrote in English as the President’s website has an English version on the upper right corner of the main page
