I want to apply for NIFs for my children. Is there an easy and cheaper way to do this than paying a lawyer to do it? Thanks
If you google âapply nif onlineâ you will find several services that will do it for you remotely for around âŹ100. Maybe cheaper than a lawyer.
If you go in person it is free, but you have to be in PT for that.

Next question - it says proof of address is needed. My children are 6 and 3 and donât have proof of address. What do people do for children?
Does it matter if their listed addresses on their NIFS are different to parentsâ?
Can I ask why you are applying ?
If youâre in Portugal, just go directly to any âFinanças ATâ, and get a token paper, waiting for your number to be called. At the counter, youâll need to present all the passports of the parents and your children, the childrenâs birth certificates, the NIF documents of the parents, and proof of address of any of the parents. The counter staff may ask for the proof of address that is consistent with the NIF documents of the parents.
In such case above, we obtained our childâs NIF document for free in Porto AT 3 this October. At that time, we didnât have our PT local address thus we presented an electronic invoice on which the address information was the same with both of our NIF documents.
However, I heard that many AT office now require appointments to issue NIF for foreigners. It is to be confirmed.
Because people say you need to include NIF on receipts as part of proving your 7 days per year residency in PT. One of my children already has their residency card, and weâll be completing our first 7 day stay next year.
Weâre not in PT so will need to do it online. Our next trip is when we need to use the NIF for receipts.
I got NIFs for our kids via the online service and yes, the default instructions are only for adults. I had to contact them to find out what to upload for children. This was a couple years ago so my memory may be fuzzy, but I think they said children are assumed to have the same address listed on the parentâs proof of NIF, so you have to upload that, and maybe also a birth certificate.
@Beanieskis I donât think getting NIFs for minor children is necessary. AIMA will in all likelihood be okay with just the boarding passes, getting receipts with your NIF listed is just an extra precaution. I canât imagine that even AIMA would ask for receipts with your childrenâs NIFsâŠ
That being said, if you really do want to get NIFs for them you can do it in person during your next trip. They are issued on the spot and can be used straight away.
However, if you want to get the NIFs online in advance, you can find several providers in our article that was linked above. Anchorless is quite cost-effective if you use our discount code.
No matter which online provider you go with, remember to enable online notifications in Portal das Finanças once you get access. That way you can cancel the NIF providerâs tax representation service before it renews.
FWIW, I used NIFOnline for all my familyâs NIFs.
I donât remember the exact process but it was extremely easy.
