Argentina announces a CBI programme is in the works

Just thought this was interesting, as it’s the first programme in a new geography. As for the wisdom of investing in such a high-volatility country, I offer no opinion.

Argentina has a fairly easy naturalization program (2 years to citizenship), so this option is nice to hear but personally not very interesting I don’t think

That’s also true. So perhaps not a particularly appealing CBI programme, but a new one nonetheless.

The interesting part is:
(1) Argentina has a significant wealth tax, so living there to naturalize is a non-starter for HNWIs who don’t have a very strong tax structure already in place.
(2) Milei’s new rules make naturalization by residence much more difficult – applicants must be physically present in Argentina the entire two years, cannot miss even one day.
(3) Argentina’s passport allows you to live in MERCOSUR, which includes tax-friendly Uruguay, Paraguay, and Peru.
(4) For those concerned about potential geopolitical instability or armed conflict, the Southern Cone is often seen as the ultimate “backup plan”.
(5) Now that Malta’s CBI is dead, Argentina’s is the highest-value CBI program and the most powerful passport that can be obtained in under 3 years.

The investment part may be scary, though – need to see the terms.

Oh, interesting point on the wealth tax. So I guess that’s what you’re buying - citizenship without tax residency, since Argentina doesn’t tax citizens living abroad.
