Anybody have a clue what to do other than wait for an opening? I saw that there was a brief period of automatic online renewal, and now we don’t.

What is the status now for us?

All visas have been extended until June 30, 2025 so, for now at least, you don’t need to worry about renewing for another year. I’m afraid all you can do is wait until AIMA sorts out its systems and gets on top of the backlog.

As I understand it, the renewal extension is based on being able to prove that you have tried to renew the visa. How do you do that if you can’t make an appointment with AIMA?

From what I understand, every visa is extended to June 30, 2025, but for extension beyond that date you will need to prove you have a pending renewal application.

From what I’ve seen in in our GV chat today, they have opened up online renewals. One of our members has received an email from AIMA asking him to pay for the renewal.

I can confirm that I received an email to renew online from AIMA today.

We have in person appointments for renewal on the 25th, so this saves us a bunch of time and money.

Please see HOW-TO: GV Automatic Online Renewal Procedure (Jan 2023→) for the latest developments and personal experiences of people who now applying for renewal. Go through the wiki carefully before renewing, if you’re doing it on your own rather than getting your lawyer to do it.

I’ve just gone back to see how to renew our GV online, but in SEF.pt, our password is now showing an error. It is correct on AIMA.pt and is the same as we used for SEF so I don’t understand what the problem is. Is the renewal only available on SEF.pt? Also, has anyone changed, after 5 years, from GV to a normal 5 year permanent residency? We live in Portugal permanently and don’t want to pay the exorbitant cost to renew for 5 years.

So, you didn’t do anything from your side (as well as your lawyer), but suddenly received this email from AIMA?

  1. And you could complete “everything” online?
    OR
  2. You just made an appointment to visit the office for biometrics/document submission/payment?

Our cards expired Jan 2024 and June 2024. I just received an email as I already had an account set up. My wife did not as she did not have an account.

I originally had an in person appointment for next week, but since it can be done on line, my attorney submitted it today electronically.

Kind of happy as we need to visit PT once it gets approved to get our time in country for the next renewal.

After finishing the auto-renewal process, are you going to attend the aima appointment? Or the scheduled appointment was also automatically cancelled when you paid the fee in the auto-renew?
