My name is Rod. I have spent countless night until 2am reading about tax laws and CFCs etc. I run various trading systems I have developed. Trying to do this tax efficiently is like trying to solve a problem against a chess grandmaster. I was surprised and pleased to find this active forum.
Im currently trying to work out if Portugalās NHR would work for me before the end of the year (Brexit transition) but fear the CFC rules or local management rules will kill that whether I trade personally or via offshore companyā¦?
Hi all. Iām Brian from Canada. Iāve lived in Japan and the US (and briefly in the UK). Lots of relatives in Europe (Austria, Italy and Germany). Iāve visited over 30 countries and looking to add more to the total. At this point, Iām interested in the Golden Visa program in Portugal and am looking at Lisbon and Porto (for now) as potential spots to move to. Love to hear thoughts and ideas. Cheers!
My family and I are also looking into Portugal. We were about to put a deposit on an apartment in Porto, but with Covid, decided to wait. We were working with La Vida Golden Visa. They seem great, but there are many unknowns, and it is so hard to know who to trust. A Portuguese lawyer contacted me through this forum. He also seems knowledgable and helpful, but I just want some assurance from someone who has already gone through the GV process. Iāll let you know if I find such a person.

Hi all. I am Roman. Forgive me if i am posting this wrong. Its my first attempt on the site. I look forward the the practical exchange of experiences here with lots of like minded people.
Because of my work and my upbringing I have moved around all my life. Until recently i had not been in the same household for more than 2 years. (51 y.o.) . Even currently i may have houses/apartments longer but since i maintain a few in a few places i am not sure that counts.
Born in California. Based from Germany, but with many professional and personal ties to: DE, GR, UK, USA, UAE, TH, CH.
Former resident of USA: CA, FL, MN, SD, NY, KE, IN; DE: BW, SA; UK: WC2, W2, RM10; NL: AMS; ES: MAD, SEV, ALI; GR: ATH; TH: BKK, PTYā¦ I might have left out a few and I dont count long stays as visitor up to 2 months. Those were all registered homes. Add travel and leisure to that and you see my movement is pretty regular. Until the pandemic, easily 52 international flights a year to do my thing.
I speak a few languages. Not all perfectly well. English, EspaƱol, Ellenika, and Deutsch are my strongest.
Work: currently Travel industry professional. Also general company management including Travel, housing, and insurance corporations.(mostly in Europe with branches TH and UAE.). In the past I exploited university programs for high mobility and entitlement to visa and or bank accounts etc. Was also a performer in what seems like another life now.
You would think my experience would carry me far, but i find that so much changes in international law that its good to be constantly engaged with information.

Iām Mike from Canada. In 2014 I quit my broadcasting job in Toronto, sold almost everything that I owned and embarked on a nearly 3-year-long adventure. I hit 32 countries in 34 months, including 120 days on a truck traveling the Silk Road from Ulaanbaatar to Istanbul, did one Camino in Spain, and attended Burning Man twice. I rode countless trains, buses, tuk-tuks, scooters, horses, camels and made dozens of new friends and acquaintances along the way. I managed to return with a smaller backpack (40 litre) than when I set out (65 litre) and have resisted the urge to buy more stuff while living and working in Toronto for the past 3 years.
I officially retired on March 31, 2020 and have since been hunkered down, avoiding the pandemic, and dreaming of my next multi-year adventure. Iām hoping to start with a return to Spain in Spring 2021 followed by a winter in India, summer of 2022 in the Baltic region, and one more winter in Asia.
Iām very happy to join this community as I still have lots to learn and perhaps a bit of advice to impart regarding independent travel and the nomadic lifestyle.

appeared few, taxes were rising and life was dull. Plus, those long wintersā¦
Ended up in Asia, and things turned out well. Itās a good geographical hub for local exploration, and seems better connected to the world.
When I first travelled a long time, 1974-75, I was able to neglect health because my body was young. Canāt do that now. Even rooted more or less in one country, it takes discipline and research to stay healthy. So many factors, obvious, unseen, unbelievable at times, all enter into oneās calculations. So this health while being nomadic or outside oneās first culture/country is a topic Iām pursuing. You were on the road almost 3 years. Interested to hear any tips for staying well.

Count me in. Iām interested in food, too. Healthy, tasty, varied, ethnic, and most of all homemade.
Tastiest dishes weāve had in recent years were in Budapest, Hungary. I think a lot of the material providers for restaurants are still local farms with fresh stuff in season.
Cutting out factory processed material is the big challenge. Supermarkets are stuffed with these products, their labeled chemicals and secret additives.
Healthiest breakfasts in memory have been traditional Korean ones - big variety of pickles, strong veggies and some fish.
Hi, Iām Gavin. Iām not currently a nomad but Iām working towards it. I traveled for 4 months last year and returned to California with a plan to travel full time. Iām going into webdev but not working/interviewing yet. Iām hoping to start my journey as a f/t nomad this month.
I was extremely lucky that I didnāt have a single health issue while traveling for three years. There were a few days in India that I didnāt stray too far from my guesthouse, if you know what I mean, but certainly nothing major.
I had been going through one asthma inhaler per month while in Canada but that issue resolved itself within a week of leaving the house that I had shared with two cats for many years. Lesson: When the allergist tells you at the age of 5 that cats and horses are an issue, donāt let two cats sleep at the foot of your bed and donāt spend 35 years working in the horse racing industry.
When I did buy a couple of inhalers in Uzbekistan the price was something like $3 each, over the counter, no prescription, no limit. They were made in Russia by Glaxo-Smith-Kline so the same drug that I paid $40 for in Canada.

Mart here. American originally, from ND, MD and CA, with SF where my heart is, but living in Italy as a Carta di Soggiorno illimitata (like a permanent Green Card) holder for the past 31 years. Recently relocated to New Hampshire fiscally and virtually, though I have kept my house in the wine country in Piemonte (which I list for rentals on a couple of sites - ask if you are interested). I do consulting with Medical Device start-ups. I am also a partner in a UK based start-up in the advanced/chronic wound healing space. I traveled a lot up until about March 9 of this year and have since been holed up in my house among the vineyards. Looking for better ways to handle international financial transactions, which is how I stumbled onto this blog.
Hi Kayla. Re your question on phones - I use a dual SIM iPhone with a fixed US number (Verizon) and an Italian Vodafone SIM card. It works pretty well for Europe, as calls from the Italian account to almost anywhere in Europe are inexpensive and the data plan is unlimited while in Europe. I really only use the Verizon number for US based banking requirements and some texting with US based people. You have to be careful to ensure that you are using the right account when calling though, as the Verizon international calling rates can kill you.
