You gotta think like an engineer in the Apollo program in the late 1960s, when computers had extremely limited memory…if you can do that, you can upload your whole passport as well as put people on the moon, and bring them back safely to Earth…

Has anyone been able to renew online without a NISS?
In the past, AIMA would accept a no debt statement in lieu of the NISS but I am not sure if this is still the case?

I don’t have an NISS and my lawyers were able to submit my renewal online about a month ago under the new process. I did provide them with my certificate of no debt.

Yeah that’s probably the answer. I’ll try 200dpi then compress that.
I’m pretty sure AIMA is using computers from the 1960s so that might just work.
Maria, is your child under 16? If so, what did you upload for your minor’s criminal record and taxpayer status? I am wondering if an explanation that they are minors would be enough. If they are 16 I guess they need to upload the actual documents.
My child is 14 years old, and I have uploaded her birth certificate, which has been consular legalized. Regarding tax status, I have uploaded documents showing that the principal applicant has no outstanding tax or social security debts.
Have you renewed your card online and passed the analysis to reach the completion step?

I didn’t write any notes. Regarding the criminal record, I also uploaded my child’s birth certificate. This means I uploaded the birth certificate to two identical sections.
My husband (principal applicant) renewed his card directly at AIMA 7 months ago and still hasn’t received it. I renewed my card online almost 2 months ago, and my child’s almost 1 month ago, and both are still in the assessment stage. It’s taking much longer than our SEF online renewal in 2023.

Has anyone had success getting the email address associated with their AIMA online account changed (from their lawyer’s etc)?
I just submitted a contact form requesting that (along with supporting documentation) and curious how long this might take.
My lawyer has told me he has a problem with my renewal.
He said that the renewal website returns an error and does not let him set up an account for me. He said he has reported it to AIMA and must wait for them to correct it in their system.
Facts that may be relevant: I’m the primary applicant. I have changed lawyers between initial application and this my first renewal - my old lawyers did share documents with my new lawyer but apparently not much.
Does anyone have any ideas of what could cause this and any work around that doesn’t involve waiting who knows how long for AIMA to resolve it?
While I was able to get registered and pay as the primary applicant, wife and mother-in-law cannot. The same error code is generated and they are unable to progress. All that can be done, according to the lawyer, is to email AIMA and ask them to sort it out. So we all have to hurry up and wait.

A suggestion- Make sure you have NIFs for dependents AND that those NIFs are mapped to the AIMA account / residence card.

Do you know what happens if you don’t manage to renew before your expiry date? I’m particularly concerned given I’m the primary applicant.
How long have you been waiting for AIMA to correct the error?
How do you map them to the AIMA account / residence card?
Our cards expired at the beginning of April so we are already in that position.
This just happened last week so we figure it won’t be any time soon.
We are in a somewhat odd position of renewing to buy time to sell, pack up and leave. So if AIMA cannot sort themselves out in the next few months, it looks like the two dependents won’t be renewing or paying the fees, which doesn’t upset me one bit.

I did that exact thing a couple of months ago. Took about 1-2 weeks after the request. We didn’t get any notification of the change, one day the new email just worked to register. You just need to keep checking.
Back in December, before GV Renewals went online I wrote to get an appointment with AIMA for renewal. May 25. Great I flew in from Trinidad went to my appointment only to find out it has to be online. Great! I feel so endeared to Portugal. Anyway, I opened an account and am wondering which documents really need to be notarized (Passport?) and how to fit the passport into a 2MB file? Several like no debt documents are just online prints. My escritura are notarized. (Can you notarize a notarization?)

To respond to your question of “can you notarize a notarization”, depends on the laws of where your notarization takes place, but for the US -a signature is notarized, a notarization is apostilled by the appropriate entity, a copy is certified (if allowed, and people often confuse this with being notarized). In my US state, a passport can by copy certified, which the certification of the notary can be apostilled by the Secretary of State. For states that do not allow copy certification, or for documents where a copy certification is not allowed, the workaround is to have a statement drafted that references said document, usually with language saying you swear the information is correct/document is original/true/correct, where your signature to the statement is notarized, which you can then take for an apostille.
Perhaps I should have phrased it in a different way:
For renewal of GV we go online and submit electronic copies of our documents.
Photocopying and scanning turns a notarized document into a copy. You can notarize a copy but if you scan or photocopy in order to submit it that destroys the notarization.
