New online ARI renewal process (Feb 2026)

For several weeks, I’ve been getting this error message when I try submit a renewal for a dependent.

Tech support messages to AIMA go unanswered. My lawyer raised it with AIMA in person and they basically shrugged and said, yeah that happens, bashed their fingers on the keyboard like they knew what they were doing, and said try again in a week. No change.

I’m pulling my hair out … anyone have any bright ideas?

UPDATE: my lawyer did get some more info from AIMA in case anyone else is having the same issue. Apparently it is a known glitch for some GVs.

In short, the old in-person renewal database isn’t fully synched with the new portal database (because of course, that would make too much sense ).

Because my last in-person renewal still hasn’t been finalised and my card has now expired, AND the portal database hasn’t been updated to note my renewal was even submitted, my dependent’s can’t renew online. And that means they can’t renew at all.

Yet another tech support ticket has been submitted but all we can do is wait.

If I’m invested in a closed-end fund that shuts down 6yrs after I applied (applied in 2021, it shuts down in 2027), how do I stay on the ARI renewal treadmill? I got my 1st ARI residence card in 2025 and will need to renew in 2027.. but my fund shuts down.

Hi Boris,

Wow, that was quick! You received your child’s card in just under two months. I also just uploaded the documents and received the card renewal receipt for my child yesterday. Hopefully my child’s cards will be processed as quickly as your child’s. The renewal fee for my child’s card is €185.60. Did you finally get your money back after it was wrongly charged to you?

Perhaps Boris received so quickly because he paid the premium platinum mega plus fee.:grin::laughing::grin:

Speak to a lawyer of course, but my understanding is that in that situation you would need to move your money into another fund or investment that is compliant with ARI so that when you renew, you can show you are holding an investment that still complies. Otherwise you will not be able to renew and you will lose the permit.

Hello Maria,

I was pleased with the speed. I will soon start chasing the refund. I am sure it will be a very long process. But at least I have the cards…

I hope for you it will also be quick. I have a feeling it may depend on the person the file is assigned to.

Boris

Some funds are looking at ways to extend the life of their funds, but this might only be a year or so and would require shareholder approval.

However, I don’t know if the new investment would be at the original value of €350,000 or the current required investment of €500,000. Asking investors to cough up another €150k due to bureaucratic delay and AIMA’s sheer incompetence would no longer surprise me.

Update that there is no update after 6 weeks.
I have zero clue when/how the problem will be solved.

What happens if your dependents’ card expires and you cannot apply for renewal because of portal issues? (While the main applicant was able to apply and waiting for the renewal evaluation) what will be their status as the cards have no extension? Thanks

Hello, have you received any updates regarding your online renewal request?

i am guessing, you can’t create an account on the portal unless your card is expiring in less than 90 days, Do i have this right?

I have an update on the issue of not being able to initiate renewals for dependents through the portal if the main investor is still waiting for an in-person renewal to process and their card has expired in the meantime.

I submitted a request explaining the error via the contact form while logged into my main investor account. Click on “Contactar”, then under “Tipo de Assunto” select “Portal de Renovações”, then under Subtipe de Assunto select “Portal de Renovações - comunicar problema”

You need to upload 3 documents - your ARI card, screenshot of the error, and a Declaração explaining the issue. In the Declaração I wrote that I was the main investor, that I completed an in-person renewal appointment several months ago but have not received a new card and the portal says my ARI is expired. I explained that my dependents were encountering an error while trying to initiate renewals and that it might be linked to the fact the portal hasn’t yet registered my in-person renewal attempt.

I added a couple of extra pages to the Declaração with the AIMA receipt proving my renewal application and payment (you can’t upload those separately because of the 3 document limit).

To be honest, I don’t actually know if my IT ticket directly resolved the problem (my lawyer had also complained at an AIMA counter several weeks ago), all I know is the issue was fixed a few days later.

I can also confirm that they solved the issue recently and dependent applications can be submitted now. You need the NIF for them and to be associated with their account.

Is NIF required for each depandant’s renewal. Is it possible to give the main investors NIF instead.
Thanks

The NIF for each applicant is required otherwise the process stops.

AIMA issued a notice recently only this: AIMA avisa que investidores que desejam renovar residência em Portugal devem ter NIF | Imigração | PÚBLICO

Has anyone moved past the “Consulta UCFE” stage? My application has been stuck there for the past 2 weeks without any progress.
