New online ARI renewal process (Feb 2026)

I’m in! Will even dust off my rusty old asp.net skills for that particular prize.

Congratulations! FUNDS or REAL ESTATE? Dependents or just main applicant?

I did NISS for myself and my wife via e-mail, completely on-line. It takes about a week, mostly because they requested additional documents (originally, I did not provide them my passport) and/or clarifications. In the end, I got a .pdf with NISS. Fairly easy process.

Just as @Boris71351 mentioned, you will need to provide all the documents in your request for NISS. Bear in mind that every district has different e-mail (and postal) address, and you should find out what yours is.

Yes, I tried entering all the information, including the principal applicant’s first and second card numbers, but it didn’t work and I received two error messages. The third card, which my husband applied to renew in October 2025, has not yet been received. All members of my family have cards expiring in October 2025.

I’ve been trying to volunteer already for three years! You will be contacted “na próxima semana”…

Oh sorry, I didn’t mean to be confusing. I was saying “I’m in” to sj-to-pt’s joke about offering to rewrite their buggy portal. I’m still waiting for my first card.

Roman, good day. If you could share how you did the NISS via email, I’d appreciate it. When was it? Did you email your local segurança social office? Or another entity? My understanding is that segurança social offices now don’t do it unless you have proof of employment or self-employment income. That’s a stumbling block for those who live off money from other countries.

This is unreal. In our case, my wife’s first card and her NIF worked. She is now on her third card (arrived in january). That card wouldn’t work. When your husband’s new card comes, I doubt it will give you access. It’s the first card that seems to be the key (another applicant I know also got in with her first card instead of the latest). Try putting in different NIF’s. See if errors are different when you put a different NIF or a different permit number. I tried that and errors changed. Try to view errors as hints (hot/cold). Basically, I got into that portal by touch, feel and listen… like a locksmith trying to pick a lock.

I am deeply grateful to learn your experience. I gained access for one of my dependent by using the “recuperate password”. Now I am able to log in for one dependent.

  • NIF NISS are not updated although I have had AIMA’s emails (via contatenos) confirming that NIF and NISS had already been updated in the system.
  • When I clicked on the option “Novo Pedido”, it asked to fill in the Resident card and Nif of the main applicant. I filled in my current resident card and NIF. It shows error saying that NIF and resident card are not correspond. I tried my first resident card and NIF and the system accepted.
  • After few minutes, system sent an email asking for payment. Yes sir, I am paying you now. Don’t be too hungry. I paid about 3k800 immediately (can’t remember exact number).
  • Now wait for next stage i.e. uploading documents…

Meanwhile, I created successfully my account although my card expires next year. One thing (not sure if it is a stupid thing) was that I clicked on “Novo Pedido” just to see how things would develop. The system created a new request right away and sent me an email asking to pay 3k800 Euros to renew. If payment is not made within 10 days, the request will be cancelled automatically. Of course I did not pay as my card is still valid until 2027. However it really shows how crazy things could develop within AIMA’s portal.

I’m happy to have helped.
Please keep us updated on the progress.
I believe re NISS and NIF, even though the fields are not filled in, it should say you are EXEMPT and can still submit the request. Since you will be uploading the finanças and the social security declarations of good standing, they will likely put that into the system. If you use your SNS proof as health insurance, they will also input the SNS user number to be embossed on your new card. At least, when they renew manually in person, that’s their practice.

Yes, that’s why I’ve given up on online renewal now and am waiting for my appointment with AIMA this April. Perhaps you were able to renew the dependent’s card because you’ve already completed the renewal for the principal applicant? In my case, the principal applicant hasn’t received their card yet, and the dependent couldn’t renew online either, so it’s likely that AIMA hasn’t finished processing the principal applicant’s renewal application. As you said, we’re like locksmiths, fumbling around with this system little by little. Even when I managed to book an appointment in person last year, I had to try every possible way to enter the data into the fields before I could successfully schedule an appointment :sad_but_relieved_face: AIMA treats us like a joke, but the money we’ve invested in this country is real

Have you tried to create an account for main applicant on the Portal-renovaçoes? I know that your main applicant did the renewal processs at the appointment. But try to create an account for main applicant and log in to see if his Nif shows correctly. If it does not show correctly for main applicant, then use contactenos to correct it.

I am a main applicant and my card is valid until 2027 and I created my account. I see that it shows my correct Nif, correct niss, and correct address. But it does not show my SNS which I already rectified via contactenos.

Hope it helps!

Dear Maria,
In Porto AIMA they won’t help you. They will take biometrics and send you off. That’s what they did with my kids. Nothing would convince them to process the renewal.
Your best bet is to use the contact form, select the option: Portal de Renovações and attach a pdf letter explaining the issue with the portal, screenshots of everything, copies of the cards. Eventually, they will get to that.

Yes, this is also a good idea for Maria.

Thank you very much for your advice. I will follow. Since my kids have nif but do not have accounts to log in the financas, should I leave this field blank? What have you put in this field for your kids? :folded_hands:

Hi, Since I didn’t pay yet, I didn’t get to the part of filling out the details and uploading files. I am at the stage where I am trying to get them to change the amount to 185€ from 3700€. But… are you and your kids in Portugal? Why can’t you log into finanças with their NIF? That’s an easy thing to organize, I believe. If your are not in Portugal, then finanças has a tax representative on file and they will send an access code to that person by mail quickly.

Thanks for the advice. My kids and I are in Portugal. They have nif but do not have an account of portaldasfinancas. I am thinking to create one for them. But i feel very uncomfortable to create an account for kids because once they have an account at tax platform, there will be some certain things that might come after as the consequences. If I am not mistaken, kids are not obliged to declare any income/tax (it is obvious to me but maybe it might not be obvious in Portugal). Therefore, by default all kids have zero tax issue. I might be wrong. But I will try to create one pdf file explaining that my kids are under 18 and are in school hence a document about good fiscal standing is not applicable to them. If AIMA is not happy about my explanation and still require kids to create a tax account, then I will do it.

I thought if they have a NIF the account already exists? Just you never accessed it. But whoever got the NIF (the fiscal representative) probably accessed it.

Yes, that’s what I’m worried about. Because we are exempt from having to provide biometric data. Thank you for the guidance.

No, we have to create it. They only have tax numbers which are NIFs. Right now, probably tax authority does not hunt them down because they are still kids. But I am sure that if my kids have an account and stay in Portugal, by the time they are 18 years + 1 day there will be some messages in their account…So my kids must not have an account and also must leave Portugal before turning 18. :joy:
