I’m about to file my citizenship application next week, and suddenly a strange question came to my mind: what are the obligations of Portuguese citizen not living in Portugal? Are there any significant points worth knowing except like keeping ID valid?..
You didn’t research this before getting GV? No wonder they want to add a civics test for citizenship 
I think the citizen card is only required when you’re inside Portugal but it will be your proof of EU rights.
I did research on the rights and obligations of a holder of a GV card in a proper time. With the application submitted in January 2021, I have only received my first card in November 2024. In the meanwhile there were delays in biometrics, then denying the issuance of cards to the citizens of Russian Federation, lawsuit etc.
Also yet in 2024 I could not even imagine that the waiting time will count from the date of the first application. Now when I’m close to the submission of the citizenship application, I want to find out what is the minimum of the activities I need to do not to break the laws.
Looks that there is not much of that, no obligatory military service, no offshore taxation…
Keep in mind that anything can change in the future depending on politics. But I assume you would also be able to renounce the citizenship if things are no longer in your benefit
