PGV / ARI Rage, Tragedy, & General Madness

This is so true @tkrunning … I’ve come across Nomad Gate, when I was mad with renewals despite the fact that I’m one of those lucky ones who at least could see preapprovals happening in ten days  During those times, my lawyer didn’t even bother to explain that stage fully, he only mentioned briefly like, there will be a preapproval within 10 days, but you don’t need to worry about it, come to the biometrics within two weeks. That was the mood then!!! This was late 2017.

One of my best friend has applied for the GV program back in Nov 2021… She has done her biometrics in Lisbon Jan 2023 and she still has not received her first residency card…
In simple terms that’s not fair and there is no excuse for it.

In my opinion if a country doesn’t want naturalization via this type of program, then she should deactivate it, yet if the program in place then it should be honored with fair and just process times in a country of rule of law.

I imagine it has, searching “Greek golden visa delays” online brings up articles saying the processing times are now 18 months, the backlog has quadrupled in the last year to 40,000 applicants, etc.

I think now popularity has shifted from PT to Greece, their GV is going through the same pains as PT’s, just delayed.

Wow, 18 months, imagine if Portugal could manage that!

Hundreds of thousands of applications are just processed by every single one of ivy league colleges and other universities which includes going through marksheets, cover letter, reference letters, criminal certificate, letter from sponsor, financial proofs, language tests and other multiple documents…from candidates across the globe which then is followed by visa process for successful applicants that needs to concluded within time before the semester begins. How hard can be it for Portugal to clear the existing GV backlog?

Us, too! Now that it’s been exactly two years since our applications were submitted, we are filing a lawsuit. We shall see…

Looks like Greece has fixed / is fixing their golden visa backlog.

You know your government is awful when the Greek government is vastly more functional than yours… I know many Greeks who are very proud of their country, but not a single one has ever expressed pride or even satisfaction in the functioning of their current government.

Currently there is a contest going on within European countries about who is more dysfunctional…and to be fair to Portugal, they are tied in first place with France.

Even agencies in the business of promoting and selling services for GV applications have seemingly given up on the clearance of the backlog. Note the careful usage of the words ‘historical …… processing delays’ , ‘slowly improving’ and ‘significantly reduced delays’.
Verbatim from an article dated 06 November, 2024.
“While the Portuguese Golen Visa program has historically been associated with processing delays, that situation is slowly improving with the introduction of AIMA (Agencia para a Imigracao e Mobilidade), which replaced the SEF in October 2023. This new immigration department is aiming to clear the backlog of Golden Visa applications by June 2026, meaning those investing today are likely to experience significantly reduced delays.”

Was it not supposed to be june-2025? When did they change it to 2026?

It is changed for consistency of the statement: “…in about a year”.

Ah yes, the improvements that forever lie just beyond the horizon:

  • Cold fusion, 20 years away since 50 years ago.
  • Full self-driving robo-taxis, ready “by the end of next year” since 2016
  • Portugal Golden Visa backlogs, clear “by next summer (no, not this coming summer, but the one after that)” since 2022

…and next four years the civility will return to U.S. politics!

Waymo actually seems to be operating fully self driving taxis in San Francisco and Los Angeles. I think at this point further expansion is more a political issue (permitting etc) than a technical one.

Yes, I was referring to the repeatedly failed promises of a certain South African-American :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Good luck! We are heading there and will file an urgent lawsuit when we land.

FELIZ NATAL DE AGUARDA ENVIO
‘‘Twas a few nights before Christmas, and all through the nation
Not an AIMA staff was stirring, nor any application;
The files were piled in corners without care
Stealing hopes that applicants could soon locate there;
The families long restless from belongings in boxes
Every media source squawking politics, toxic
And mamma with her scowl, and me my grimace,
Had grown tired of discussing this 18-month impasse.

When out on the SEF screen arose such a sight,
I blinked three times just to be sure it was right.
“Aguarda Envio,” the webpage declared,
In stark opposition to what had always been there
Since time immemorial, since the lockdowns just lifted
Had something in an AIMA office finally… shifted?
Showed it to wifey to confirm I was lucid;
To any Portuguese I must have sounded so stupid
Repeating the words slowly, slow-ly like a child,
My wife looking on, half-bemused, half-beguiled.
“Aguarda envio”, its meaning not springing to mind,
I clicked on English, some clarity hoping to find.

But the English displayed the idea no clearer,
So I searched NomadGate, and got somewhat nearer.
“Aguarda envio” means AIMA wants something!
Could it again be time to go paperwork hunting?
“What do they want?!” I scrolled up and down the page,
In my chest grew the rumblings of apostille rage.
But if this were finally, finally the end of the trek,
I might even have patience for one more FBI check.
After several minutes of finding no indication,
I called my attorney to relieve my fixation.

She answered my query with a “you see…”, and already,
I could feel what was coming, my legs twitching, unsteady,
“AIMA’s been upgrading their system so lame,
So all the statuses, they now show just the same
Now, Porto! Now, Faro! Now, Azores and Lisbon!
On Coimbra, on Guarda, on Portimão, and Lisbon (again)!
From the 2019s, to those who submitted this May,
‘Aguarda Envio’ is the only status on display.”

So this Christmas, to all the embittered, I say
Fear not, ARI holders, your status is safe
Fret not, ye biometrixed, your cards still await
It may take the rest of your natural life,
But they’ll all die lazy while we survive out of spite!
“Aguarda Envio” to all, and to all (except AIMA and any Portuguese politician) a good night!
