PT Tax filing for European Green Card Holder

Hello everyone,

I’m a Dutch national, US green card holder and signed up for NHR (v1) in dec 2023.
The last 10 years I have kept it simple and just filed my US taxes.

Since I got my NHR at the end of 2023 (and now living in PT) I now need to file both my US 2024 taxes as well as my PT taxes. I asked AI and it suggested to first file my US taxes and then use that US tax return for my PT tax return. (My taxes are relatively straightforward and I don’t have PT sourced income).

Does anyone have experience with this process and do I need a PT accountant for this or is it relatively simple as I already have filed my US taxes (and no additional PT taxes are expected)?

Thanks in advance,
Giles

See what this lovely lady does:

I’m not a PT tax resident, but every single overseas American person I know, citizen or green card holder, files for US extension + then overseas taxes + then US taxes for some reason. But if you are absolutely sure you don’t need to pay PT any taxes, see what the lady did.

Fresh Portugal did a pretty comprehensive webinar about things like this back in January. The replay is still available at: 2024 Tax Return in Portugal - How to file? What changed?  | Login to this event

e.g. this diagram around 34 minutes in:

Fresh do seem to know their stuff, but they are expensive… and might not be taking new clients for the 2024 tax year anymore as they’re full-up (webinar talks about this too). Around 27 minutes in they spook you that filing taxes in PT is nothing like the ease of which we do it in the US, Canada or the UK… but then you might expect them to say that

I am not a US person, but from what I remember, when you declare your foreign income in PT (which some of it will be exempt from PT-tax under NHR), the system will ask you how much foreign tax you paid. So in your case I presume you’d need to know how much US tax you paid on your US income.

So I believe in your case you can just go ahead and file your PT declaration before end of June. I personally did not use an accountant for that.

I can compare PT vs. UK and in my opinion the ‘ease’ is at the same level.
For basic things both filing systems are straightforward, the difficulty may arise in ‘pre-calculating’ one’s specific amounts before you enter them, and of course the tax year calendars are different so that adds some calculation to do.
