I think they will wait, the current el presidente is not friendly towards this bill at all, better to just wait an extra month to get a different person in
Hopefully the new president is Seguro not Ventura and he stands up for immigrant rights too.
He wrote the constitution, I think.
No - he’s a constitutional law scholar, but he was not involved - too young at the time. You might be thinking of Jorge Miranda.
FYI the constitution was written by an assembly of 250 people Constituent Assembly of Portugal - Wikipedia
So I guess a lot of older, prominent politicians can claim they did “(help) write the constitution”
Sorry if this has been asked before but I wanted to understand how are the latest timelines possibilities for the updated nationality law going into inforce? My 5 years from application is in the last week of April and I have to decide now whether I go all in trying to complete all the requirements to submit the nationality application incase it comes into effect after my 5 years mark.
The speculation I read here is that it could kick in as soon as mid-February, pending the outcome of the runoff elections. Most of the opinions I’ve seen hold that it will probably pass sooner rather than later, but of course it’s all rumor and hearsay and guesswork.
(confounding factors: it’s not clear that Chega will support the kinds of changes the TC ruling requires, and if they don’t, then AD will need support from PSD)
I think you mean PS. PSD is the main party in the AD coalition.
Also no way the law would be in effect by mid-February. Someone hitting 5 years in April has a decent shot at making the cut.
Indeed I did, thank you.
This is my feeling as well, the parliament is almost always slow at doing things.
go ahead and start preparing as documents take time
Thanks guys. Yeah I am going ahead with the documents. It’s the language certificate I am dreading. It’s expensive (urgent/private PLA) and will eat a lot of my time ![]()
I just enrolled for a 150 hour class starting on 26 Jan and will conclude on 3rd April. Its with Edu setPt and the fee is 750 Euro. You can try joining the same.
Bugger - that date’s full. But what made you choose Eduset ?
Maybe they start a new one for us. It will be me and my wife so 3 people already?
There were number of reasons: 1)they were very prompt in responding. 2) not that expensive 3) the certificate is valid for Citizenship application and 4) will issue a certificate of enrollment on 27 Jan which my lawyers will use for the application.
I initially enrolled for the 12 Jan start date but that course timing was 10 pm to 1 am my time which was not good. This one will be 6-9 pm. They start a course every 2 weeks.
I’ll build onto this, most probably the new president will come into the office around mid Feb, assuming that it will be Seguro, I assume he might have one round of evaluation - at least I don’t expect him to approve the new legislation on day one; so that will take us to March. I’m sure once the new president is elected he will be asked how he will treat the new legislation so by late Feb we’ll have more visibility on timelines.
Hi, is this an online course or in class?
In Portugal, a newly elected president typically takes office on March 9, exactly five years after the previous inauguration. For the 2026 election cycle, the timeline is as follows:
Election Day (First Round): January 18, 2026.
Run-off Election (Second Round): February 8, 2026.
Inauguration Day: March 9, 2026.
Since the 2026 election has proceeded to a runoff, it will take 29 days (approximately four weeks) for the winner of the February 8 second round to be sworn into office.
