The online renewal portal for a time required a NISS. I think that has been sorted out now.

You can get a NISS without registering an activity.

Did you have the apostilled FBI clearance translated into Portuguese and then certified? or just submitted the Apostilled English version ?

Translated and apostilled at the state department. Pretty sure that’s the only acceptable way for thastrong text document.

I’ve been told I need proof health insurance or SNS for my upcoming ARI renewal.

FWIW, I did supply the printout of my SNS record at renewal as I live ‘full time’ in PT. If that’s the case for you too I think you should supply it (or your private health insurance paper).

Question for people who have obtained NISS but don’t live in Portugal. I know that I can get a NISS online, but are you using your home address (e.g. the States, Turkiye, UK, etc.) or are you using your lawyer’s office?

My renewal was recently denied for lack of a couple of documents. Wondering if anyone else was also denied and what documents they (successfully) used to reverse the denial. For background, I’ve invested in IMGA in 2021, received residency card in late 2023, renewed in late 2026, and received a letter this month from AIMA that states the following:

Da análise dos documentos apresentados e da consulta das bases de dados relevantes para a apreciação do pedido, constatou-se que o(a) requerente não logrou comprovar o(s) seguinte(s) requisito(s) legais:
o Certificado comprovativo da titularidade das unidades de participação, livre de ónus e
encargos, emitido pela entidade responsável pelo registo (Art. 65.º-E, n.º 15, a) DR 84/2007);
Declaração emitida pela sociedade gestora do fundo de investimento, atestando a manutenção das condições do investimento (Art. 65.º-E, n.º 15, b) DR 84/2007)

Has anyone else addressed this issue? If so, what documents did you submit and what was the source of these documents?

I am not an expert on renewals as I still have no card. So, take my comments below with a grain of salt.

It sounds like AIMA is requesting two documents:

  1. Certification attesting that you own (proof of ownership) the units of participation (shares) of the Fund investment, and that these units are not encumbered (pledged for or used as collateral for debt). This needs to be issued by the Fund company.
  2. Declaration issued by the management company of the fund attesting or proofing that the investment conditions are met (I think this refers to the 60% invested in Portuguese companies and that no real estate or real property-related investments are included in the fund.)
