Will the in-person renewals follow the same requirement of not requiring a marriage license, and only need to email confirmation that you are still married?
We are living in a country different from our nationality. Apart from criminal records for adults, the lawyer asks for tax number as proof of living in the current country. Does anyone know if the proof is also needed for our minor children (its the national ID card of country of residence)
I understand the renewal can be booked from 90 days prior to the card expiry date.
Is this 90 calendar or business days?
Hello.
My GV is property investment. In the renewal process, what is considered as proof of investment? Is it Certidao permanent that the property still in my name?

Proof of entry. there is no longer a passport stamp. I just arrived in Lisbon and used the digital gates. Since I showed them my resident card there did not stamp my passport. I am guessing since I have the boarding passes and will have various receipts with my NIF as well as Airbnb accommodations that should suffice
Our renewal date was August, our lawyers got an appointment in December. This is what is required of the applicant. Since we had biometrics done within the last 10 years, only the lawyer needs to attend the appointment. Spouse and child just need my promise to be responsible for them, marriage certificate (spouse), apostilled school enrollment (child), documented travel, background check, copy of the passport.
- Full copy of your passport
- Criminal record (FBI) certified by an apostille
- Proof of permanency in Portugal for 14 days
- Requirements declaration
- Proof of investment
- Non debt declarations to fiscal authorities and social security in Portugal
Apostilled marriage certificate?
My lawyer did not request for updated proof of investment for my renewal appointment on 26 September.
Of course. Yes every official document like that needs to be apostilled.
@mmd - please please tell me my copy of my USA passport doesn’t need to be apostilled before submission of ARI application to AIMA???
Also, did you have to scan all pages of your native country passport before submitting online to AIMA?
You must scan all pages including cover and passport must be apostilled. Alternatively, the lawyer can certify it if they have the original.
My lawyer copied all the pages of our passports. @portugalwanderer sounds like they know best on the apostille if they don’t have it or you don’t have a lawyer.
Thank you for these links. I am a GV holder about to renew for the first time. I DO NOT and NEVER HAVE worked or received salary in PT. Do I need to open a social security account to receive the no-debt document from them? This bit is a little unclear to me.
You have two options essentially:
- register yourself for self-employment, obtain your own NISS, register online for Social Security portal, then obtain your no-debt declaration any time online (and of course you remember to de-register yourself from self-employment once you stop that activity)
- you get a confirmation that you are not registered with Social Security. For this you’d need a lawyer with the PoA, or you can go in person to a Social Security office, for which you may need to pre-book an appointment depending on which office you choose to visit.
I think the social security NISS no debt is implicitly waived for GV. Because they aren’t required to reside, they don’t receive benefits or contribute.
Not sure where you got this information.
I have done three renewals lately so three NISS declarations were duly submitted, and they did not say it was not needed.
In my dealings with AIMA, I do not want to be in a position of giving them any chance of delaying my process due to some confusion as to whether some document was mandatory or not. I simply follow the official requirements posted by AIMA themselves, so in case I submit everything and they want to argue with me - good luck.. ![]()
Just to clarify:
- NIF is mandatory. The AT declaration of no-debt is mandatory also.
- NISS itself is optional. So either the declaration of no-debt (if you have a NISS) OR a declaration of “No record” (if you don’t have a NISS) is mandatory.
No no no. There is no “implicit waiver” just because “it wouldn’t make sense”
The law says you need proof to renew. You must have it.
The law says you need to show a residence in Portugal to get PR. You must show it.
Doesn’t matter if none of these make sense for GV. Portugal does not run on “sense”.
