Better for citizenship: UK or Ireland

I can’t seem to find a good answer to this question. I recently discovered that I have paths to obtain either. Who has notes on which is objectively better?

Get both. Better is in the eye of the beholder.

  • Where would you rather live/work? U.K., or any of the EU countries?
  • What languages do you speak?
  • Which is cheaper/faster/easier to obtain the paperwork and passport?
  • Does the U.K. or one of the EU countries have a more favorable tax regime for your particular situation?
  • Which is easier to naturalize your spouse/children?

In your position, I would be trying to get both. You never know when rules may change, backlogs get bigger, or you get a sudden urge/need to move. You don’t want to be starting that paperwork then. There are too many variables to jsut pronounce one as better, even though Ireland gives you more flexibility by opening the EU.

Both UK & Irish passports give the right to live or work in both countries through the Common Travel Area.

The Irish passport also gives the right to live or work in the EU.

So if you have an Irish passport there’s little need for a UK passport in this context, the same is not true of the UK passport ( you may still want EU access).
