Just sat the CIPLE A2 Exam - AMA

Do you know if you can register for the exam again whilst waiting for your results? I’ve booked in November with the plan I’ll sit it again the following year if I fail, but the dates for the following year are likely to be released before I have the result from my first attempt.

How is it helping? What about a2?

It’s helping because things like numbers, and a lot of other vocab are very similar - so it reduces the amount of learning required. Verbs and other grammar also very similar. I’m learning in a class with mainly native Chinese speakers (who all also speak excellent English), and they seem to find it harder on the whole.

No idea if it will help with A2 as I’m only halfway through an A1 course. I assume it will help with verb tenses.

I personally would have tried the course route and invested 6months of learning only if it didn’t work. Time is money.

Unless of course you plan to leave in Portugal - in this case I see more value in doing the exam since you need to learn Portuguese anyway.

P.s. I am mind blown that it took so long despite knowing Spanish at A2 level. I thought these languages are almost identical.

I’m also surprised. I work with Spanish and Portuguese people doing business in Portugal, and the Spanish can understand pretty much everything that’s said and written by the Portuguese, unless they speak very fast.

I guess Yes. I registered multiple eams around 10 Jan 2024 for B1 May 2024, B2 July and B2 Nov 2024. My A2 exam was in Nov 2023.

I’m considering to do the DEPLE (B1) exam as well. How do you feel the difficulty level of studying for the B1 as compared to the A2 level?

Thank you for this.

  1. can you describe a little what was the writing section like? Did you have to write out sentences as response to questions? Does it involve past or future tense usage?

  2. I am getting confused about requirements for CIPLE and the GV. I understood CIPLE is only required to apply for citizenship, and has nothing to do with applying for a visa?

  3. One of the attorneys at our firm (CMS) advised us not to take the CIPLE until we actually have or are getting our GV residency (we are in the process of resubmitting given ā€œresetā€) and not to take exam until we are definately within 24 months of having an application for citizenship submitted & in the process of being reviewed, or we may have to sit for the exam again if it’s greater than 2 years from our CIPLE certification. I had never heard this. I thought once you are certified- it’s done. Has anyone else heard this info?

  1. The written part was basically for me to write an email inviting people to a party. I don’t remember the exact length but it was roughly 150-200 words. I had to include aspect of venue, date, dress code and request people not to bring presents in my text. I would worry more about the listening part of the exam rather written part.
  2. I already have a golden visa (did my biometrics right before the pandemic in Jan 2020). So I’ve reached the five year mark hence I need to fulfill the A2 language requirement for either citizenship or permanent residency.
  3. I’ve heard conflicting reports on what fulfills the language requirement when I asked my lawyer in early 2023. I decided to play it safe and do the CIPLE exam. After the pandemic, I was sure that I didn’t want to do anything online. If you have the time and means, I would recommend doing classes in Portugal.

Thank you so much.
Yes, we plan to study and do immersion in Portugal.
My final quesitos was re the time allowed for validity of CIPLE in regards to citizenship.

We have recently been told the CIPLE certificate is only valid for 2 years, and if citizenship application is not being processed within that time frame, we would likely have to sit for the exam again and get recertified all over again.

Hence, we are relunctant to schedule or take the CIPLE until we know for a fact are citizenship all will be submitted shortly thereafter- meaning within a month or so.

Has anyone else heard about this 2 year limit on validity of CIPLE certification?

Never heard of such validity from my lawyer when I asked her about the same.

I’ve also never heard that the CIPLE exam had a validity. My understanding is that it has no expiry date and is valid for life.

Thank you again for taking the time to post this and respond.

@rogergan68 Your information was very helpful. I greatly appreciate your response.

I was wondering about this. I thought the CAPLE website said that if you lose your certificate, the exam center can reissue it - but only if it’s less than 2 years since you took the exam. But this FAQ says the opposite:

Qual o período de validade da certificação CAPLE?
Os certificados e diplomas CAPLE são vitalícios, não têm um prazo de validade.

Okay this link mentions 2 years: https://www.iclp.letras.ulisboa.pt/certificados-e-diplomas-exames-caple/

Maybe the 2 year limit applies only to the fee waiver?

Thank you.
I have always understood the certificate is lifetime.
My question is if the government / AIMA imposes their own time limit on CIPLE certification.

Attorney stated (at least what I understood) is that for a resident to apply for citizenship, that 2 years is the time limit after passing CIPLE to do so (apply), without having to retake the exam.

Replying to myself here-
Reviewing the AIMA site, I see nothing whatsoever about a time limit for language certification.

I will get back to our legal team over the next week or two and ask about this to get clarification, I think I must have misunderstood their point-

They may have been asking us to wait because our application has not even been processed yet.

None of the official exams of CAPLE (A1/A2, B1/B2, C1/C2 ) have an expiry date. They are for life:

I’ve not read anything suggesting that your language qualifications expire. The only reason it might be prudent to wait until you are closer to citizenship eligibility to complete the language requirement is that the government could change the rules in the future eg. increase the level needed from A2 to B1, change the eligibility of some courses etc.

When Costa tried to retroactively cancel the ARI program though, it was swiftly ruled unconstitutional. Even if the citizenship law was changed to have more stringent language requirements, it seems pretty unlikely that that would affect people whose applications have already been submitted. The courts have made it pretty clear that the government can’t change the rules on people in the middle of a process.
