New AIMA Process - Receiving Final Approval/Residency Card

@Benjamin_Trotter Thanks for the information. However, it seems likely that you paid through the DUC (as opposed to at the biometric appointment, which only started in 2025). It would be helpful it you added your information to the Stage 4 thread under the traditional system (Awaiting Final Approval (Stage 4)).

The effort here is to follow those who paid at the biometric appointment starting in 2025. We are trying to determine if there is any difference in processing speed (or getting cards) as a result of paying at the appointment. Thanks!

Came across the following in another forum: Portal AIMA nĂŁo funciona? Como renovar tĂtulo residĂȘncia Portugal 2025 - Problemas e soluçÔes - ZR Law

Can’t vouch for authenticity, so, FWIW

Application (Spouse): January, 2022
No Lawsuit
Biometrics/DUC at Biometrics - April, 2025
Card: Awaiting receipt

New process is another type of milking the cow.

In the previous process:

  1. Application submission
  2. Wait 3-5 years
  3. Approval
  4. DUC payment :dollar_banknote:
  5. Wait 2 weeks
  6. Get the card

Payment was after 3-5 years.

New process:

  1. Application submission
  2. Wait 4-6 months
  3. Biometrics + DUC Payment :dollar_banknote:
  4. Wait 3-5 years
  5. Approval
  6. Wait 2 weeks
  7. Get the card

Now the process is “simpler” for getting the money.

A 2 weeks wait from approval to card is a fantasy land.
Latest estimates are around 3 months.

Is there anybody who received their cards? I guess we are all waiting approvals but we are in the same queue with others who had biometrics before January.

@flowershack recently received his cards from a June appointment under the new process. Hopefully, he’s the canary in the mineshaft (or more positive metaphor) for others!

July appointment in Porto, still no cards.

I have a recent update. They invited my son for biometric again for July 2026.

We had our biometrics on January 2025 and our applications are not approved yet. We are still waiting our cards.

I want to ask you all: Can you see your biometrics payments in the ARI portal? It seems that in the new process they are not aware of this and it might be related to our waiting.

If they can send me again a biometric appointment, it can means that they are also not aware that we are waiting for approval.

Your son has already provided biometric data, and now he’s being asked to provide it again, and in seven months? That’s absurd.

Now only after providing biometric data is the application officially submitted and enters the review process. But that’s a lengthy process, no one except a few guys within AIMA knows where the case is assigned for review or the review progress.

@mrcbmth @mwwilliams10 @heidieckard

Would you please check ARI portal about biometric payments? Can you see any evidence about it?

@Cemo - I see “Transferred” for both my application and my dependent. I received my Residency Card in August, but it expires April,2027. My dependent has not received their card, and our attorneys are checking back with AIMA. She mentioned that they haven’t processed biometric payments dated April, 2025. Hopefully, this is the info you are seeking, but if not, please let me know any other details you are trying to find. :slightly_smiling_face:

Ask your lawyer if they can contact AIMA to rectify the mistake? Supposedly lawyers have a special channel to AIMA now.

Can you see biometrics payments in the portal?

Sorry, did a deeper dive and yes, my payment of €6, 179.40 is shown as “settled” on 15-04-2025. However, my dependent is still outstanding and not processed. His biometrics, which was paid in full, was around mid-April, 2025. Hope that helps

Did you pay at the biometric? I mean that are you part of new process?

I paid almost a year (or 2) after my biometrics. Unfortunately, I don’t remember if they were in 2023 or 2024, but I paid this year in full.
However, my spouse did pay (in full) at the time of his biometrics in Lisboa. It’s very possible his application fell under the new system as there doesn’t appear to be any movement from April, 2025.

Do you know if a dependent younger than 18 years-old pay 50% of the Approval Fee of €6,179.40? According to the AIMA table: https://aima.gov.pt/media/pages/documents/dc677d0005-1741971293/tabela-de-taxas-e-demais-encargos-a-cobrar-pelos-procedimentos-administrativos.pdf

Nope, they pay full freight.
