My husband, the primary investor, submitted a renewal application directly to AIMA in October 2025, but he has yet to receive his card. My child and I are dependents. We received an email notifying us that online renewal has been enabled.
I successfully created my account, but I’m still receiving the following error message: “Ocorreu 1 erro
O Número do Titulo do Investidor indicado não é elegível para o efeito”
My child under 18 years old received the following warning: “Neste momento o seu tipo de autorização de residência não está disponível para renovação.”
It’s probably because we had an in-person renewal appointment in April 2026, even though we didn’t need to go through the biometric process. Has anyone else encountered this?

The official SEF documentation indicates it is required, but my lawyer never asked for any such thing during my dependent renewals. So, I believe there is a means to explain that the application does not live in Portugal and therefore the subsistence requirement is unnecessary.
Perhaps the “ajuda” popup icon gives some clarifiation to this ??
I’m the dependent and when I login to the portal, the only option I have is “New Application”, when I click that I have to enter Investor Title Number and Investor NIF. So I put the main applicant residence permit number and NIF number and I get the error
“The Investor Title Number does not exist.
The Investor’s NIF does not exist”
Anyone knows what the issue is?
I tried putting in my own info and I get the error “The indicated Investor Title Number is not eligible for this purpose.” So not sure if this means the portal is not processing dependents renewals yet or not. My card expired early Feb 2026.

Have you submitted your NIF and NISS registrations according to AIMA’s instructions? If not, submit your registrations and wait 1 or 2 days for an AIMA email notification that the updates are complete. After doing that, I only received one error warning: “Ocorreu 1 erro
O Número do Titulo do Investidor indicado não é elegível para o efeito”
I think the same as you, but someone told me they were able to renew online for the whole family, however, the children’s fee was higher than the adult’s.It is faulty.

Which SEF document required means of subsistence for an ARI applicant? I have never seen it.
Are you referring to dependents maybe, but for them it is also waived if they are ARI dependents. That’s regardless if people live in PT or not. The only requirement I am aware that alters if someone lives ‘full time’ in PT is the proof of health insurance in PT.
In any case, I have never submitted any such proof for my own or my dependants’ renewals (under the old in-person renewal process).

I spoke with the lawyers today. They have no idea what to make of this novel “means of subsistence” requirement for an ARI. They’re planning to upload the bank declaration in that slot and hope for the best.

As I recall, the notion was similar to the health insurance. only applicable if you are living in Portugal full time.

I can guarantee you it was never there. Means of subsistence was never a requirement of neither the initial ARI application nor the renewal.
Quick question please: what is the recommended time to start the renewal process : 6 months prior to card expiry date? Can we create an account on the portal if the current residency card will get expire in 8 months?
The advice from my lawyer is to apply for the renewal three months before the old one will expire (which is the earliest you’re allowed to), but hold off on acquiring documents and apostilles until the appointment has been booked.

I am trying to understand the new system from February 16 for renewals. Is it completely online which the investor can do himself also. There is no need for an appointment, unless biometrics are required.

Sorry if this has been asked and answered and I missed it, but is a biometrics appointment in person always going to be required for a renewal, or is there a possibility of just renewing online and paying the fee. I am debating dropping out of the program, but if I can simply renew online without going to a biometrics appointment, I might just pay the fee and keep it going for a little longer. thanks!

Unclear at this point. If you had a biometrics within 10 years there is a reasonable chance you can avoid biometrics, but no guarantee on that. Also, there is a chance they may want to see your passport in person if they have suspicions.

I think, yes. The new process rolled out last week is pay first and then upload documents as I understand. You will hear from them later about possible biometrics.
