New online ARI renewal process (Feb 2026)

The in-person attendance at renewal became optional some time mid last year.
You could send your lawyer instead and the biometrics were not required unless expired (10 year adults / 5 years minors).

I went for my 2nd renewal of Oct 1. I still dont have a card. My attorney received an email that says it has been approved. I am looking for the silver lining - which is that the slower they are hoefully my card will have a date that “extends” my approved residency timeline. I.e instead of Dec 2025, perhaps it will be March 2026???

Those of you who received emails inviting you to renew, did you already have an account with AIMA? My lawyer dealt with everything and as far as I’m aware AIMA would not have my email address. I was not planning to use my original lawyer to renew, however I haven’t formally appointed a new lawyer yet.

Please share the list of documents to be uploaded.
Thanks

My lawyers (AGPC) emailed offering to get a NISS for my wife and I for our renewal (our cards expire in Sept/Oct)

Is there documentation somewhere that we need a NISS for this renewal?

I’m looking at the NISS request page, and it wants me to upload a document saying why I need one.

Perhaps I should just say something else for why I need one?

We do not need a NISS for renewal.
A declaration of ‘no record’ from Social Security should suffice.

Having a NISS though, followed by online registration, allows for obtaining the necessary Social Security declaration of ‘no debt’ free of charge and easily without a lawyer in the future.

I thought renewal fee was 2700 EUR?

Can this be obtained remotely without a lawyer?

EDIT: A NISS can be requested Segurança Social Direta and then I think a declaration of “no debt” can be requested after. Requesting a NISS was a bit wonky for me, I had trouble entering values into some of the fields (perhaps because I was translating it to English in Chrome) so I had Gemini in Chrome enter them for me. Also on the review page it kept showing the dates I entered (birthdate, passport expiration) as 1 day earlier than what I actually entered.

I believe the link you shared is for an online request for the NISS itself.
Not for a declaration of ‘no record’.

As far as I know, the declaration of ‘no record’ can only be obtained in person by attending the Social Security office (or sending a lawyer there).

On the contrary, the declaration of ‘no debt’ can be easily obtained online once you have your NISS and had registered online on Seguranca Social Direta (which is quite an involved process by the way..)

Tommigun is correct.

  • In-Person/Alternative Methods:
    • BalcĂŁo: Visit a Social Security (Segurança Social) office with your NIF.
    • Phone: Call the Social Security Line (+351 210 545 400 / +351 300 502 502).
  • Validity: The certificate is valid for 4 months from the date of issue.
  • Validity Verification: You can verify the authenticity of the declaration using the code on the document via the online portal

Let us know how you succeed with getting a NISS.

I gave up after being rejected many times - without work or self-employment it seems difficult to obtain.

Yes, thanks for the clarification. I requested a NISS. :crossed_fingers:

I paid e-residence.com around €150 to get me NISS a few years ago - not sure if they still offer that service. They didn’t ask for proof of employment or anything, just the NIF.

After many days of trying, my attempt to create the login profile was successful today. It gave me a warning message that I needed clearance from Social Security and Income tax for any services to be provided. And there was only one option to click which Chrome translated to ‘New application’ - which I clicked on. Right now, the portal says " Your application has been submitted and is awaiting evaluation".

I have tried to get some answers and some of them are probably covered in this thread or others but I could not find them -

  1. Do dependants need to create their own profile on this portal to submit their renewal applications?
  2. There seems a debate about applying for NISS vs applying for clearance of social security obligations. And that the latter seems to more successful. But there seems to be no online process for this clearance certificate - is this correct?
  3. Can we still request our GV ‘coordinator’ or the law firm to do this process or is this technically seen as self serve?
  4. The portal has not updated to the stage asking me to make the payment within 10 days. But its only for me and not the dependents. Does this answer my question 1?

Thanks. Yes, I try this recommendation when you previously posted. I signed-up last September but was repeatedly rejected as authorities asked for more and more documents I could not produce (proof of employment, self-employment invoices etc)

Thanks @Starts so to clarify, even applying through the e-residence facilitator, the documentary requirements are now much stricter, and impossible if you’re not working in Portugal?

Yes, for me it didn’t work.
This is cut and paste from one of their emails to me after signing-up:

After updating the governmental requirements, Seguranca Social requested additional information, such as:

  1. Portuguese residence permit (both sides) or Recibo de comporativo de pedido de ConcessĂŁo de autorização de residĂȘncia

  2. Proof of work from Portugal (Signed work contract if you are employed; Inicio de atividade if you are self-employed / CertidĂŁo Permanente if you are company owner)

  3. If you are employed - provide your employer NISS number

  4. Please specify the reason of obtaining the NISS:
    a. Carry out a professional activity
    b. Apply for a social security benefit
    c. Apply for a support/benefit from another country
