Our US Tax preparer filed our extension and directed us to make an appropriate payment in April. In October he told us he would file by the extension deadline but now he has been MIA.
Does anyone have a good tax preparer that doesn’t need to be brought up to speed on how to deal with two PFICs from Portugal? It would also be helpful if next year they can assist me in depreciation on building expenses I want to take on rentals.
We used to pay around $1000-$1500 for tax prep so we would ideally be looking for something in this range again.
My MO is to use an online service for expats since they are familiar with the filing requirements for foreign accounts. Currently I am using Taxes for Expats taxesforexpats dot com. They charge in the range of what you are suggesting. Then I ALSO utilize expattaxtools dot com to complete the PFIC portion. You fill out a spreadsheet and provide the forms and they provide you with a step by step as to what numbers go where. That service is just a $150 or so. If you already have an accountant, you could just use the second provider who will do that calculation and provide to your accountant. Have found its difficult to find someone who is very familiar with PFICS (at least in my area). You will need to do some research on how you want your foreign account qualified (QEF, etc.) maybe others will have a one stop shop for you…
