Real Cost of Visa: What Am I Getting Wrong?

I wanted to budget the current actual cost of getting a Golden Visa. I’m sure I’ve got some numbers off, tried to use only round numbers, so please correct me. I’m just adding it up for 1 person in this exercise:

Portuguese Govt Fees Till Permanent GV 12k
Lawyer Fees Till Permanent GV 5K
7 Annual Days in Portugal x 14 yrs 14k
Optimize Subscription Fee 5k
Optimize Fund Excess Fee (5k x 7 yrs) 35k
Permanent GV Fee (x2) 15k
Permanent Visa Lawyer Fees 5k

Total Till Citizenship in 15 yrs 91k

Assumptions/Notes:

  • Above numbers x1000 in Euro.
  • I would need to renew the PV 1 time while I wait for the citizenship application to run its course.
  • I don’t know the cost or lawyer fees to apply for citizenship. Maybe someone can help with that.
  • I derive the Optimize Fund excess fee from funds that invest in a similar basket of Portuguese stocks/bonds but carry an expense ratio of about 1% lower.

Thank you for any help/reality check. I’m trying to come up with a realistic estimate for budgeting purposes.

You would need your application and first card, plus two renewals. Isn’t that c€21k?

My calculation is 6k for the initial and 3k for each renewal.

Okay. So same number of cards but lower fee on renewals.
I haven’t renewed yet, and been moved to d2 which has a lower fee, so can’t confirm the €3k fee for current applicant renewals, but agree on the logic.

I would suggest you aren’t accounting for inflation. 15 years is a long time. Fees always go up. A rule of thumb would be that stuff doubles every 20 years.

Your travel costs seem optimistic as do your lawyer fees. Obviously YMMV, but I agreed to an amount twice that plus 4 years ago and that was good at the time, though admittedly for two people.

Plus you need to account for the bogey that the law can and will change on you. How you want to do that, I don’t know.

All valid points, thanks. My travel costs are super-low since I have a place in Spain that I used several times per year.

Inflation is an issue, as well as lost investment opportunity.
