How to open a N26 Bank account—from anywhere*

I just got turned down by them as an American setting up an American account because I don’t have a rental/mortgage agreement and utility bill to verify a set home address.

I’m wondering if I’ll be able to set up a EU account at some point after that denial.

My account was closed today, because I should leave in Europe if I want to have the account , I hope they will back the money that were on my card🥺 now I need to find other banks that can be opened in Europe without been there or US bank with a card. I am Ukrainian living in Mexico. Guys do you know an online bank that can send the card to Mexico or US( I have a friend there)

Pairing your app to your account just got more difficult. If you are in EU, you will need an EU SIM. They cannot send the code otherwise and despite their own online support articles, their service center cannot provide this code. What is most annoying is that one agent said they would be able to give me this code after receiving my card in the mail and the next agent, after providing all sorts of verifying information (and waiting 30-45 minutes) said I could not be helped.

“Moving forward, we’ll need to adhere to two-factor authentication (2FA). 2FA is obligatory due to EU regulation since September of 2019. This new form of verification is mandatory. We must follow this as it is a legal requirement. I apologize for this inconvenience and I really do understand that this is not ideal for you. However, if you can just provide a European number, you will be able to recieve this code.”

Pick up a prepaid EU SIM for 5 euros. There are many that just require you to make 1 text or call per year to keep it active. There’s another thread that lists providers that don’t enforce their fair usage outside EU rules.

The information in this post is outdated. As of right now, 30 Sept. 2019, N26 only accepts customers in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and the US. Residents of other countries are rejected, and existing customers in those countries are having their accounts closed.

Thanks for the update. I’ll make sure the article gets updated.

What’s your source regarding this? I believe N26 in the past have allowed those who already opened an account in a previously supported country to keep their account.

Can I send money to a friend who is using N26 euro card from my bank in the USA

I have a Spanish Orange sim card in my phone and I cannot reload it with my N26 card. Also now that they are using smartphones to authenticate your login I can no longer access my account because my account is paired with my north american phone. and they don’t send texts to NA numbers.

Try reloading it from the main Orange website here. The Spanish Orange website only accepts cards issued in Spain.

You can use Transferwise or send a wire transfer.

Beware that rules says that yoy cannot stay/use the card abroad for more tahn 18 months. Meaning that (I think) that at least once every year and a half, you need to use tge card within the eurozone

As a resident in Algeria, and have a friend in USA for a delivery address. WHAT are my options for a N26 account? The EU or US account? Thanks

@Rani_Jus A US based account requires an SSN and may require additional address verification according to this Nomad Gate article.

To sign up for the EU account, you just need a mailing address in a supported EU country.

Therefore, it’s much easier signing up for the EU account especially if you have a friend that lives there.

Am I able to open a n26 account without being a registered resident of any EU country? My nationality is Argentina and I’m on a tourist visa staying in the Uk. Thanks!

Hi @Marc1! I was wondering if you managed to get your savings account on your French N26 account to work? I am debating whether I get a German :de: or French :clipperton_island: account and was curious about your experience in France.

Merci!

Hi Alessandro,

I was just wondering if you managed to solve this? Did you actually have to make a first transfer from your own account?

Recap:

So after Reading the article and all of the comments and questions that followed in subsequent years, I take it N26 is still ‘the’ bank for nomads who require a EUR account (perhaps USD and GBP accounts as well?). However, due to recent EU regulation, things have changed and one must now not only have an EU address where to send the card, but also physically be in the EU (or have a VPN at the time of syncing the bank account to the phone app) AND have a EU phone number.

I have a Latin American passport ( :mexico:t) and I am currently debating whether to open a French-based( :st_martin: ) or German-based ( :de: ) N26 account (countries where this nomad lived before and finds herself returning to regularly). I wanted to compare perks and disadvantages in order to make an informed decision; however, the conclusions one arrives to from the info on the oficial N26 site are quite scanty:

In Germany :de:

*one is able to request additional cards (not in France).

*one has 3 free withdrawals only in Germany, while in France the free withdrawals can be anywhere in the Eurozone.

Aside from that, the only other information I found is from this post ( thanks @tkrunning ! ):

*the German account comes with the possibility of investing

*one can get a Maestro Card

However, after Reading The [amazing] Ultimate Retirement Savings Guide for Expats & Nomads, I am left to wonder, how much of a perk this really is, as one could invest on ETFs as described in the guide which is the reason I would like to have an account in Euros in the first place.

Other info came from two nomadgaters who reported having issues with their French-based N29 accounts :fr:: (on having a non-operational savings account and about the origin of the first transfer into the account –whether from another one of your own accounts or not). There was no follow up on this.

Though perhaps not such a great perk, I am also aware that one is able to deposit cash in Germany but I’m not sure that would be posible in France (or in other countries).

I will be opening my account soon-ish and vaguita :palm_tree: would defintely be much thankful for any additional information on perks and/or disadvantages that come with where the account is registered.

I’d recommend signing up in Austria or Germany, if you can.

I think the investment feature may have been removed recently from even the German version—but as you say it’s not really needed.

Austria has the benefit of no limit on free EUR withdrawals, as well as all or at least most of the features of the German version.

As Germany is their primary country it’s the safest bet if you want to make sure you get early access to new features in the future. Compared with Austria it’s the limit on ATM withdrawals in Germany that’s the only drawback.

My first deposit was from an account in my name (but not a French account). Whatever the technicalities of the matter may be, this worked without any problem. I’m still not sure how important this is, so I am just relating my experience.
